| The anti-gay MP who calls herself a Christian
|
|
|
Last night I found myself writing an open letter to an MP representing a constituency in Northern Ireland where I live. Irish Robinson has made a verbal attack against homosexuals in Westminster in June stating "There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children." She also states that it is the duty of government to uphold God's law believing that homosexuality should not be tolerated.
For anyone who knows me on this site, they will know I have strong Christian beliefs. I believe it is my duty to love my fellow men and women. I also have a gay son. I have no doubt whatsoever that Mark was born that way, that it was natured, not nurtured. He dated girls until he was 24 when he could no longer live the lie. He is highly intelligent, good looking, sensitive and aesthetic. In other words, a son of whom I am immensely proud. He has never brought shame to our family and the young men from the gay community who he has brought home to meet us have all been thoroughly likeable. My mother, a deeply religious woman who lived by her bible, accepted that God had made him that way and she had no intention of thinking any less of him. For me it has caused a sadness because I know that he would have been a superb father. He is not particularly delighted with his lot as he knows it has been a more difficult road to follow than that of his 3 brothers and sister. He is, however, very much the centre of our family. He is the 'fixer', the one who sorts things out for the rest of us. He believes in God but does not practice the Christian faith. He admires me for doing so.
Iris Robinson is also the wife of our first Minister, Peter Robinson, which thrusts her further into public life. She believes that homosexuals can be 'changed' and has offered the help of a psychologist to those who want to be. If we have people like this leading our already troubled country, what hope of tolerance have we got for the future. I wonder would her views be very different if she had a gay son or daughter. After all, we don't have a choice at birth. We are the way we are. Would she turn her back on her religious views or her son? I will let you know if I get any response.

Auntie E - her approach sounds ignorant and careless.
Good on you for writing to her. I hope she will listen. But usually people like that have their mind made up, with what they see as the majority rule. Popularity not intelligence overrides the views of people like her.
I enjoyed reading this post... thank you for sharing it with us.

Thanks for the encouragement Easy. I hope she gets stopped before she causes more unhappiness. The gay community are very vulnerable.

I agree with you that it is not a choice. I don't think most people would make the choice to be different from the rest of society in that way. I dated someone who believed it was a choice and I quickly realized that we were not a match because of his screwed up beliefs. I'm glad you chose to do something about it.

What a great post. In case I haven't said it before or made it obvious, I have the utmost respect for you - you are intelligent, funny, eloquent, tolerant and clearly a wonderful mother. I pity Iris Robinson as she is clearly ignorant.

Prelude - thank you. If there had been a choice, Mark would not have accepted what he got. Thankfully, a lot of people agree and are signing a petition to have her removed from a position where she can incite hatred. Will keep you posted.

Meredith - I don't know what to say in response except thank you. This evening the news tells us that so many people feel angry that the PM has been asked to intervene. A local columnist this evening has pointed out the implications for everyone connected with gay people, friends, family, etc., so I feel better. Hope all is well with you and look forward to the next instalment.....

Miss E good for you:)And as you know both of my kids are gay. Gay bashers make me see red. As my son had said to me "Do you really think I would of chosen this? This is who I am". E I wouldn't want my kids any other way. I can so understand your anger. Maybe I should write a letter to this snot as well.
Take care Kiddo, happy writing :)
