And it's All Saints Day on Sunday in the Anglican Church so we shall say a prayer for Joe! As to the packing - when will we ever learn? I thought I had packed light for a recent trip to France - returned to realise I had only used half of it. But.....I shall do it again next time. Poor Bryan - another saint!

It isn't easy and it's very unfair, but you have achieved such a lot. I sympathise totally as I have battled with my own weight for the past 10 years. You sound as though you aren't going to let it all pile back on again and deserve all the encouragement you can get. I wish you the very best of luck even though all that exercise exhausts me just reading about it. I just manage to walk the dogs every day so well done you.

I totally agree. We have a horse in training at the moment which we share with two other friends. The trainer informed us that his back was injured and it might be best to put him down. Meanwhile, his groom asked if he could take him home and let him rest for a year. Two of us agreed immediately and the horse went out to grass. He is perfectly restored to robust health and enjoys a very happy life with the groom's family. We have another horse in training who is loved so much by his trainer he is utterly spoilt and has only run once in the last two seasons. Neither horses are jumpers as I couldn't bear that, but they have good lives. What annoys me about the big breeders is that they pretend to put the horse's welfare first and foremost and have the very best vets money can buy but when it comes to the crunch the insurance is more valuable. I am just angry because it all could have been avoided. The same stable had a horse put down at the Breeders Cup in Chicago four years ago and that was with reasonable weather conditions and a good track. Yesterday was madness. I know also about the greyhounds and would adopt one tomorrow but I already have 3 dogs and I believe ex racing dogs needs individual attention and are not great with small dogs and two of mine are just that. Good to hear from you and thanks for taking the time and for sharing Babe's story. Best, E

He's not, believe me. He just sees it one way and you see it another. Rob used to insist on telling the teacher when someone in class did something wrong. He didn't get it that it wasn't making him popular. The other day he told me something that happened in work and was amazed by my reaction when I told him he had actually hurt someone by what he had said. It suddenly became clear to him but it took me back to the days when we didn't understand. Believe me, I know how frustrated you are but there are counsellors today who can really help you both. He just needs to see that. Maybe the baby will cause him to grow up quickly. I really hope so for your sake. Last night we had friends of my daughters round for dinner and I just saw how well Rob fitted in for the first time. So you see sweetheart, there is hope.

My stepson has foetal alcahol sydrome. He also has the facial symptoms which has made life very difficult for him. It wasn't easy bringing him up but he is now a fine young man of 28 with a good job and his own home. Find out all you can about it and then you will understand why your boyfriend reacts the way he does. I started to cope with it once I understood he was not acting the way he did to upset us. He has a heightened sense of right and wrong which is sometimes hard to understand. He has matured well but it still isn't easy for him. You can do it with a lot of help so seek it from wherever you can get it so he can understand himself and you can be helped to understand him. The baby will be totally unaffected. God Bless

I'm Irish, living in Ireland, so a lot of the politics are wasted on me. I have to agree though that the weather doesn't seem to have changed that much in my lifetime. Ireland isn't known for having great summers, but I can remember some that were quite remarkable. But then again, so could my mother, and my grandmother. This year was pretty mediocre but we're enjoying unusually high temperatures for October. I have experienced snow at Easter but then again, so did my grandmother. All in all, it hasn't really changed a lot. What has changed is our information. The media allows us to know the weather all over the world, day by day. As a child we only worried about what tomorrow would bring, not about global warming.
As to man desiring to rule other men, history has shown us again and again that old men stay at home and send young men to their deaths. It's a fact.
I'm off to do a bit more thinking!

We had prayers for Anna this morning at prayer breakfast and this evening she will be prayed for at a special prayer supper. On Monday there will be prayers for her in a united service of all the churches in Holywood, Co Down at a special healing service taken by Brother David Jardine, a very special man. Isn't it wonderful that God never sleeps and hears us no matter where in the world we are. So while you and Anna sleep, we are praying. I have made up a little montage of the photos you post of Anna and the family so we can all see how special she is. God Bless, Elaine

You could always do what one of my teachers did. She had a blue Asilone bottle in her top drawer (Asilone was a well known treatment for indigestion)which she opened periodically and took a slug or two. She would then rub her chest by way of explanation. My mother said she must have an ulcer. Thirty years later I met that same teacher whilst playing bridge. She was now about 92 and had the same Asilone bottle, but then I found out it contained a pretty stiff gin and tonic! Which all goes to prove if you take enought G & T's you will live till your 90's and still have the ability to play a pretty mean game of bridge.
Can't wait for the next episode. E

How to refuse to make yourself miserable on 2007-10-08 10:20:55 |

That all makes a lot of sense and with the exception of Goddess Kali Ma I go along with most of it. For me, when I get mad, and I do, a lot, I just take some deep breaths and ask the good Lord to give me the Grace to carry on. I respect the way you cope and I believe you can respect the way I do. I'm sorry though that your mother has been so hard on you. You certainly have done nothing to warrant her wrath, so it's a pity she doesn't follow your guide lines.
There are a few grammatical errors, but too few to mention. Sometimes it's best just to write what you need to without having to concentrate of being correct.
El Groucho's sounds great - you deserve a treat and I know just what you mean about driving fast. Sometimes, when there's an open road, no traffic and safe conditions, I long to put my foot down and sing out loud. It's just not worth it as I know to my cost. E

Hi Richard,
When Susan's healing began, it was really slow and at times painful, but it happened and she was restored to 99% of what she had been. I believe the other 1% is a reminder. The point was she was removed from death's door at the 11th hour and everyone, including the top surgeons and physicians admitted they had witnessed something they could not understand. I pray it will be this way for Anna. Our prayers continue - Blessings, Elaine

Hi Cynthia,
I did not think you were unhappy by what you wrote in your blog; I made that assumption by reading 'about me' in your profile. That's also why I added that I do not want you to think I am trying to sound superior.
I read with interest the demonstration used by your friend. The same process is used in Kinesiology (haven't a clue how that is spelt and not near a dictionary) and I can see for myself how it works.
I totally believe we have to control our thoughts. For me that is part of my Christian life and not one that I find easy. Right now I am dealing with someone who I find so hard to like but I know I have to overcome it, so I know how diffficult it is.
Even at my age I am still finding out things about myself everyday. I try to make sense of my past and use my understanding of my errors to improve my future. The one steadfast thing in my life is God and the Christian life. I'm not a good Christian - I'm a great sinner, but I do believe in the Holy Spirit and I know that small inner voice has been given to me. You would call it conscience, I know it isn't.
I am genuinely pleased that you are at peace and happy with yourself. I wouldn't want to change or alter that but I am sad that you have known people who call themselves Christians and have let you down so badly.
I hope your day is as good as it is here in Ireland. It is warm and sunny and it feels good. Best, Elaine

Hi everybody,
It sounds like the family are having a day of prayer tomorrow, but for those who would like to say a short prayer together for Anna's healing, could we say 4 pm, British time. I'm not sure what time that will be in Ohio, but I think it will be around 10am Washington time. Anyway, I just think there is power in group prayer, so thank you for everyone who is planning in joining in. Sincerely, Elaine

When people asked him how he was he would say 'Sure if I was any better I couldn't stick it.'
He would also describe people as being as well known as a begging ass. I never quite got that one.
And if I was fidgeting he would tell me I was 'up and down like a fiddler's elbow'.

I do hope that it helps to write down your feelings as you do. You have a very keen mind and can express yourself in a very articulate manner. You do make minor errors but to correct them would destroy the flow and would not be worthy of you. Can I just say I wish you could find contentment and peace of mind. The best advice about Christianity I ever got was from one of the most intellectual academics I ever met. He's a professor and when I asked him about my doubts, he smiled and said 'Just Believe.' Since then that is what I have done and it makes things so much easier. I'm sorry your past was such a troubled one and I don't feel superior to you in any way - many of us have had bad experiences. It's what you do with them that matters. I hope I don't sound like I'm talking down cause I wouldn't insult you, I promise. It's a big thing to take in that God is listening to every prayer from every sinner, but it's such a wonderful thing to know that he does. We are mortals and only capable of doing what humans can do, even the cleverest and most intelligent of us, but He is mighty and beyond our comprehension. Forgive the lecture - I just wish you peace. Speech by the way, is spelt with two e's. Unless it is an American spelling of which I am not knowledgeable. E

Thank you for taking the time to explain. You did ask for corrections and that is the only reason I dared suggest them to you. I think you have a great ability to write and I look forward to reading something in the very near future. The subject of God is a very personal one and people can be very hurt by remarks suggesting he does not exist. Without him yesterday I don't know where I would have been. Knowledge of him is the greatest gift you can be given. I do like your enquiring mind and I promise I shall continue to correct where I can as long as it does not cause offence. Elaine

Annie, Why not send a synopsis and the first three chapters of your book to a publisher or writer's agent. Then, if you get a positive response, you will have a real sense of purpose to finish it. You sound very like me, but one thing about this site is you get a lot of encouragement to write, so good luck

If you really want corrections, then God sits on a 'throne'. It should be You're going to hell, not your and it should be 'Magic' of the Universe. Apart from that it is very well written, but I feel very sad that you feel so strongly about a God who you believe does not exist. Would you take the time to write an essay about Santa? Best wishes anyway.

I am one of those fortunate people who live by the sea. In Donegal our house is at the most Northerly point of Ireland and our nearest neighbours beyond the Atlantic are in America. I never tire of the changing scene as the wind whips up the waves and the moon stills them. It makes make so aware of how powerful it is as it gives and takes away. On stormy nights I think of those fisherman so many years ago who lost their lives doing what they had to do. Most of all I am reminded of Our Maker whose hand is in everything around us. Best wishes Scotslad

Hi Lea,
Hard as it may sound, bringing up children is just substituing one problem for another. However, with a lot of love and prayer you will get through. I am a grandmother now and starting to experience the same angst for my daughter and her little boy that you describe. However, the best thing you can do is give and show a lot of love and pray each day for the Grace to get through, one day at a time. The rest of the time - just enjoy! I wish you many, many years of pleasure as a Mother.
