| The Ugly Friend |
This happened to me a while ago, but I figured I should put it here for reference, as I'm sure I will reference this story in future blogs.
I was hanging-out in Brentwood with a couple friends of mine, M and B. M is a tall brown-hair-blue-eyed beauty who doesn't think she's as pretty as she actually is. Even when we're out and people hit on her, she dismisses it. B looks like the skater-type with a swimmer's build, bleach-blonde hair and crystal blue eyes. He's in his late 20's and never notices the women around that stare.
So we decided to go to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Brentwood to get a cup of coffee and chat, as it had been a while since we spent time together. We sat outside and immediately began catching-up.
Then I noticed a strikingly handsome man come-out, look for a table and sit. A few moments later another man, just as handsome emerged, looked around and sat with the first one. "Two models hanging out together," I thought to myself. A minute or so later, third man came to the patio. He was overweight and frumpy-looking. His clothes were disheveled and his hair stringy and undone. He glanced around, sat with the first two men, and they all began chatting like old friends.
After some time, I leaned-in to my friends and pointed-out the table. I then explained my theory that "whenever you see a group of 3 or more people, there's always an 'ugly' friend." As silly as this proposition was, the more we talked about it, the more we found it to be true. Matthew McConoughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Lance Armstrong (sorry, Lance). The Dixie Chicks (sorry, Natalie). The cast of Lost (sorry, Hurley). This isn't to say that they're not friends or that they're not talented, but we noticed that, in relation to the other two, there is ALWAYS the ugly friend.
We laughed about this for a while trying to come-up with more examples, when it hit me.
I was the ugly friend.
