Death Proof

I was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago (and I will write about it when I can actually laugh about it), but don't worry, I'm fine (I know you were worried). So, as my car is currently incapacitated, my friend JV was kind enought to offer me the use of one of his cars (he has 3 AND a motorcycle . . . and his roommate D has 2. Between the 2 of them they have 6 motor vehicles. SIX! How many to 2 people need? But I digress). So JV's letting me use his truck, Chuck. Chuck is an older Nissan pick-up white with one red passenger-side door. He has no bumper in the back, and has over-sized tires.

And Chuck, I would say, is death-proof.

First, he goes 0 to 60 in about 45 seconds (for non-car enthusiasts, that is not fast. not very fast at all). I'll be at a light and actually feel bad for the people stuck behind me. And don't don't get me started on the acceleration lanes of the freeway. I actually rock my body forward in the acceleration lanes in hopes that my momentum will help the car pick up speed faster. Second, he tops-out at about 75mph. This is normally not a problem, I just have to remember not to get in the far left lane when there's no traffic (which is quite rare in LA). Finally, and probably most telling, is that it breaks insanely well. It goes from 70 to 0 in about 4.5 feet. It's ridiculous, really. When I'm just coasting and tap the brakes the car screeched to a complette halt. People see the car do that, drive past me and give me the "oh, he's asian" look (occasionally accompanied by a little shake of the head).

So if you see a white nissan pick-up with a red passenger-side door, and complain because it's (A) accelerating too slowly, (B) not going fast enough on the freeway, or (C) stopping on a dime, don't worry. I DO know what I'm doing, and I'm in a death-proof car. I'll be fine.
