So i went to Phenom Phen and it was nice. I saw some of t he tourist things but mainly i just looked around and enjoyed western food. I wanted to go east and see some dolphins and some other easterly things so i left the busy streets only after two days to go to Kratie.
Kratie was nice, but tiny and completely central to it was a market that was a bit on the funky side. (as of smell not of coolness) but the people were nice. I had the impression that they didn't see tourists often. I only stayed a day. I did some power tourism, i slept the night saw the dolphins in the morning and travelled to one of the most north easterly towns called Ratanakiri. The dolphins were cute. they had flat heads and despite of their rarity i saw about 10. I literallly spent an hour trying to get a photo of the fuckers and managed to get a video.
Ratanakiri was nice, there was a crater lake which was really pretty and a nice swimming hole if not a bit scary of the things that lurk below. it was completly surrounded by forest. I met a lovely Canadian and Aussie in Kratie. There were some annoying french children playing in the water and they had those tire innertubes to play with. and the Canadian was like,' you want to play.' the poor french kids didn't know how to say no in english and would just say jibberish (no not french) and she would kick their innertubes so they would float away. it was brilliant.
We saw some hill tribes, which were a bit sad. but not so sad, they had love shacks for the girls. if they wanted to sleep with someone outside of marriage they guy had to give her dad a chicken or something. he he. I noticed that the elders had stretched ears. I went with my guide to the market and i got some cool wood ones. somehow he managed to find these gorgouse ivory ones but they were huge. like about 3 inch diameter and 3 in length. i would have gotten them but they were too expensive (350$) well i guess they were illigal and too large to hide in my bum so forget about it!
I got a wee case of foodpoisoning there. but it passed quickly the only thing was that i wanted to stay another day to help prevent anysort of 'accident'. the bus was fairly minimal plus there were too many dangers of running into the bush for a shit. I thing i'm a bit unlucky when it comes to explosives.
the trip back was surprisingly good. i had a great travel buddy (that aussie i mentioned earlier) and the driver was great so it only took the 12 hours that they said.
I stayed another day to recoup in Phenom Phen. then i got the bus to Vietnam! it was the nicest bus I have been on since coming to south east asia. mind you i'm a bit cheap so i have been gettng local buses but this was posh. but perhaps my stanards are low. i was excitied that people weren't spitting on the floor. even got breakfast.
So now off to Saigon!
