So i finally got my butt over the boarder! I managed to get a ride into Hatyai from an English teacher from Amsterdam who was going into town to shop. As luck has it i just caught the only train out of their! In the border crossing, i noticed a sign up for conditions of entering and leaving the country. One of the rule was that they don't allow 'Hippyness'. I was a bit nervous that long unwashed hair and sandles might not get me in. but to my relief there was a real hippy next to me! lol it was funny and it went smooth. I went to the wrong seat because my ticket was written so badly and i met this funny man from Sudan. He was with his wife and 6 kids and they were travelling down from teh Sudan for Ramadan. Later on i went to get some instant noodles in the trains cafeteria. everyone was sitting and had food in front of them. so i ordered sat and ate. I noticed people looked really mad and were staring at me. I thought it was because of my tattoos but then the Sudan man came by and said, 'oh don't worry your not offending people by eating during ramadan' shit i realized then that everyone had food but no one was eating. I felt so bad. He did open communications with the girls i was offending next to me. When they realized i was canadian they were super happy to practice their English with me. and were really nice, we had a long talk about school but one of the girls would get stuck on a word and would ask me in Malay what it was. It was funny. I learned that my Sudan friend worked as some tv presenter there. And I had the impression that he was impressed of my ablitity to look like every race. I think he wanted me on Sudan tv! lol, I told him i'm not interested in anything like that.
He was a really nice man but i had to tell him to go because i needed some sleep.
I originally was going to Ipo but was advised to go to Tapah to transfer to the Cameroon Highlands. I arrived at 4am and had to take a local bus to another bus for 8am. I must have looked pretty pathetic at the trainstop because the manager offered me an office to rest in. the office was ajecent to the platform with windows. he turned the a/c on and i managed to get some shut eye. I did however blocked all the doors with my bags and carryed a knife. but only to be extra safe. there was this dodgy guy who was a janitor. He insisted to drive me to the bus station. Everything i said like I will takt the bus he would give me reasons that i couldn't do it. like the buses don't run. My favorite was that he said it was too dangerous for a woman to walk alone in the town. I looked over his shoulder and there were woman exercising just outside the train station! I told him my husband won't feel comfortable with me being alone in the car with him. if he could get his mangager or another woman in the car i would go. That pretty much stopped him in his tracks. When i went out the powerwalking women looked at me and one said. 'you follow her she's going to the bus station' so i did. the lady took me quickly there poined to the bus stop and walked back. it was really funny. I managed to get the local bus and another local bus up. Man the buses were rickety. the second ones seats were so broken that every turn i would almost fall out of my seat. oh well there goes any sleep that i wanted.
The Camaroon highlands are really nice. they are known for a tea plantation which i visited yesterday. the hostel i'm in is really strict and the guests are wierd. lot of couples generally and no one wants to talk! To my relief i met a wonderful french woman who is a true nomad. she just sold her mothers house (she died) andis living around the world off her savings. She has been everywhere. I also met some others who are really nice and now its a bit more plesent here. I was thinking of going to another town but i think i may jsut stay in Kuala Lumpur tommorrow. I want to save some money and to be quite frank i'm not too keen on malaysia. Don't get me wrong its nice but not my cup of tea.
