 The great experiment!
Is it possible for one family to make a difference simply by recycling?  How much glass, plastic, steel, cardboard and aluminum does the average family just throw away each year?  If all that was recycled, how much energy and resources could be saved?

Our family is going to attempt to find out!

Our family is not completely typical - we have 2 parents and 5 kids between the ages of 12 and 17.  Two of the kids spend 50% of their nights with us and the other 3 kids spend every other weekend with us.  One of the girls goes off to college in August - she's our big soda drinker so I expect that after she leaves for school, our aluminum can usage will decline!

Over the course of the next 12 months we will measure our recycling by weight, keeping track of how much we take to our local waste recycling transfer station.  We will also be researching the products being recycled, attempting to quantify the impact we are having on the usage of natural resources and energy.  Additionally, we will be searching for ways to recycle the items that our transfer station does not accept.

We've just begun this journey - keep checking back to see how far we've gotten and how much we've been able to recycle.

Recycle, reduce, reuse!
