| Valentino - The Last Emperor |
|
As soon as I saw the movie title on the Vogue magazine, I decided to find it in stores. I've heard late rumors saying that the head of Valentino, the fashion designer Carl Lagerfeld would have to step down. And the news shocked me. My friends used to say that I'm a fashion frantic. I always countered them by saying "Valentino effect!" And I couldn't deny that the moment I was in one of Valentino boutique stores in South Coast Plaza (SoCal), when touching the sleek silk dress or the big bow on the red leather purse, I was in heaven. Over 45 years, Carl's insatiable desire for beauty, fit and tailorship artistry has established himself a legendary icon in the fashion industry. But at the same time of his perfecting the mastery of design, he overlooked the real problem of his gigantic business - money. His extreme taste for detail and material, tireless pursuit for perfection made his business grow. But, it also made him suffer big losses. After having unprofitable runway shows and narrowing clientele (limiting to Hollywood celebrity and royal family members), Valetino has gotten into tremendous cash shortages. Will this legendary fashion kingdom survive today's changing market? It depends. How many of us will afford to even look around for red ruffled gowns that could cost us $1500.00? It's hard to predict whether Valetino will survive or not. But one thing is sure, as Carl predicted, "After me, it's going to be flood...". I would say, we had you for at least 45 glorious heartfelt years.
