| The House of Sand |
|
If there is any movie worth watching, this is the top one on my recommendation list. This Brazilian picture was taken inside Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, which provided us with picturesque scenes and aethetic blend of nature (of Northern Brazil) and its people (civilization). The storyline is simple. Due to a twist of fate, mother (Maria) and daughter (Aurea) had landed at the deserted/sandy place (with no access to civilization). It didn't matter that their fellow workers abandoned them. It didn't matter that Aurea's fanatic husband died there. It didn't matter that they struggled to get out of the place but had no options other than staying (when Aurea had to give the idea up for her daughter and mother). It didn't matter that Aurea lost her chance to reunite her soldier boyfriend, to whom she really loved. At the end of the movie, Maria (Aurea's daughter) returned to the House of Sand and brought back a music box for Aurea. While listening to the music, Maria asked Aurea why didn't she leave the House of Sand in later life. Aurea gathered her thoughts and raised an interesting question, "Can you imagine living on the moon?" She then answered, "It's like being here. The moon is full of sand, only sand." For those who are interested in space science and beyond or the relationship between science and life, the movie is a must-seen too.
