 The Magical Transformation at Midnight
Last evening I led a midnight yoga class. Just as high evening mass is a tradition of Christmas, I look forward to this being a celebration practice for years to come. I was giving of service at the studio I teach for in St. Louis. This was the 5th annual “24 Hours of Yoga” where teachers from all over the county comes to teach; all proceeds go to our yearly charity. There were a few students who were aiming to practice all 24 hours, some had attempted the year prior and made it as far as 18 hours straight.

Students transitioned in with shy curiosity for the newness of my novelty as a new teacher to them. Only one student had taken classes with me at the studio, as I have just been added to their line-up of teachers this November. I went around the room, having each student choose a card that carried an intention. I gave instruction that this would be the intention of their practice, if the card did not resonate with them, I would exchange cards, or they may make their own affirmation. We would come back to these in thought through our practice.

A few students remained from the previous class, and some had returned from earlier that evening. Many were lying down, or sitting slumped over, as it was 11:00pm CST. I brought my smile with me to my mat, as I tugged off my boots and socks and stepped to the edges of my mat. I invited each person to stand with me as we walked our feet to the base of Tadasana, Mountain, and began our breathing.

We set intentions, and gave sound to our life force flowing within the room. The sound of breath was so grounded and vibrant. We moved from our standing position through a seemingly synchronized flow that gave each person the ability to tap into his or her own purpose as we expanded and extended each pose to our best edge for the evening.

Each person was so swept up in energy that a few each time I moved to adjust so that the visual learners could see me, would also reposition themselves. It played into a very comfortable and silly environment that was filled in sound and we all were plugged into to the current of each other’s energy.

The sequence evolved to be more upon energizing, opening hearts, and freeing our resolutions and goals for 2009. At about 5 till midnight, we met Savasana, final relaxation. I invited each yogi to connect with his or her cards or the thing that was most dear to their heart for 2009. As we inhaled we would fill each cell of our body with this intention, and as we exhaled, we would release this into the Universe. The breath as we pull it into the body exchanges through lungs and heart in the space that exists between our symmetrical bodies, I asked each person to think of this space as infinite within them, containing a piece of the Universe.

The next class awaiting the Studio space began to chant in the New Year a bit before midnight. We each in relaxation began to let sound flow through us on the floor. The energetic hum of Om filled the building. The vibration and clarity of tune gave chills that were more profound than the largest display of fireworks. At 12:03pm, the entire space came to a hush; the fireworks over the St. Louis Arch began to explode for the celebration of the New Year.

The New Year is a fresh beginning, a fresh start. The clock comes back to 1, the growth of the season goes from remission to fertile. It is a time for change, and a time to reconnect. So many left that evening, including me with glowing radiating light that permeated through and warmed every space we were in.

Welcome to 2009, a year of infinite possibilities and abundance. The world as we know it is changing. I am excited that it is the world of old and we have a New Earth to unleash. We can make a difference through our words, thoughts, and actions. It begins with you.
