| How cable TV made me mean
|

I got off early from work today. It happens about once a month and I jump on the chance to leave early and enjoy some down time. So, you can imagine my disappointment when I got home this afternoon and my cable was turned off. Apparently I forgot to pay my bill and they cut everything off (I have one of those bundled internet, cable, phone packages). I immediately paid the outstanding balance and my phone and internet worked right away, but not the cable. There wasn't anything in particular that I really wanted to watch but just the idea of not being able to watch it was pissing me off. So I called the cable company and told them that I had made a payment and wanted to know when my service would be resotred. I got this ANNOYING service agent who sounded exactly like Gomer Pyle. Well GOOOLLLY! "Sorry ma'am, it looks like yer outta luck. Aw shucks. I think that department might be closed. Let me give you their number and you can call em in the morning to straighten it out. That's a real downer, don't you know? Too bad fer you. Frustrating stuff that is." Well, I LOST IT! I was livid. I paid my money and I wanted my TV. I went off on poor Gomer like he had just told me that I would never see television again. I ripped him a new one and I think you know what I mean. I asked to talk to his supervisor. And he put me on hold. Then he'd pipe in every now and then and say "still trying to connect you, please hang on." Oh that just made me even angrier. Finally I told him I thought he was full of it, that I had worked for his company in the past and things weren't this disorganized. He had the NERVE to tell me that he'd been there 11 years and he'd never heard my name before. This company has tens of thousands of employees across the country and he claims to know all of them. AACK! You can imagine how I reacted to that. Finally I was so frustrated with the guy that I just hung up on his golly jee butt and called the number he'd given me. Well, low and behold, it was the WRONG number!! It was the number of internet, not cable TV. Gomer freakin' Pyle didn't even know who he was trying to connect me to. Eleven years my butt. So then I go round and round with the automated system and after 30 minutes I gave up. iIresigned myself to the fact that maybe I just needed to get my tennies on and get to the gym. But I didn't. I ate a bowl of ice cream instead and started returning e-mails, bought a ticket to Vegas. I started feeling better. For kicks I turned the TV and it worked! I don't know how and I don't know why but it worked and now I am watching my beloved Mavericks warm up to beat the Grizzlies.
But thinking about this whole situation made me realize a couple of things. I was never mad at Gomer. He was doing his job, albeit poorly. I was mad at myself and took it out on him. I was the one who forgot to pay the bill and had to deal with the consequences. My reaction was poor and overblown. And I took it out on a guy who didn't deserve my bad attitude. I also realized that I clearly depend on TV too much and need to get some new hobbies. I also realized that I really need to pay bills the day they come in because if I don't I forget to do it and pay the price, like today, in the end. I could blame it on my ADD but that would be a cop out. So I'm just going to admit that I'm disorganized and little on the TV crazy side. Oh but thank goodness it's back on. Thank goodness! |
