I should have known the day was going to be interesting - we were headed out to see a friend, D, who I'd helped set up his first iPod over the other weekend a while back. D lives way out in the boonies, and has no high-speed service; dial-up only. So to set up the iPod, I had him bring it out to my place for high-speed service, then we drove out to his place to show him how to start loading his CD collection onto his new toy (by the way; D's wife now owns one as well!). So I've been to his house once. I saw it quickly; it's a big house, down a long series of unmarked dirt roads.
So we're heading out to go see D, but we (my roommate and I) stop at a Burger King for soda before we start this big drive - probably 50 to 60 miles outta town. I'm standing in line, waiting, when some ol' gal (that I've never met before) comes up to me and says to me, "Didn't you used to have short hair?" Without missing a beat, I looked at her and said, "No; it was this long since I was born!" So I knew this was going to be an interesting trip... heeheehee!
This time I paid a lil more attention to where we went - only a few miles off a main highway in the area, in a very rural, farm-like community. When we arrive, D realizes that I've only seen the house, and asks if I'd like to see the property. I think to myself, sure - this'll kill ten minutes, right? So I agree. D goes and gets his crew-cab four-wheel drive Ford and I'm thinking, is he really that lazy? We load up into the truck, and D explains to me that in these parts, the smallest parcel sold is a five-acre parcel. He owns two, 8.25 acre parcels, next to each other. 16.5 acres! There's a creek on it, we saw some deer run in front of us as we drove along, we saw multiple fields, on, and on, and on! HUGE this place is! We drove the property for at least 45 minutes. D owns multiple tractors in the 50 - 60 hp range just to maintain roads on this place... wow. I tried to talk D into taking off the back blade and front arms and take that tractor four-bying, but as of yet, no deal. I'll keep at him.
We climbed up some cool hillsides and had a great view - wish I'd have known; I'd have brought the camera! For those who've lived in the cement jungle until you've had your fill, and are really looking for escape from all of that, this was your ticket! Simply nature at it's most splendid. You look up, and all around, and all you see and hear and smell is mother nature. It feels like plugging in. We spent hours out here; a friend of his named L came by while we were there and told us of how he owns some twenty acres down the road and does his own farming, using NO insecticide, via crop rotation principles only. Very humorous and likeable fellow; the whole day was my first day to enjoy moving here since I arrived in January. Loved it to the utmost.
