As predicted, my job has started to grate on my nerves. But the unique thing about the particular clusterfuck that is my company is that, for me, it’s lose-lose: if I speak up and try to do explain how to do something to one of the stable of pod-people that hold the keys to the castle, I’m perceived as “difficult”; on the other hand, if I blindly work on my assignments without correcting their fuck-ups, I eventually get a slap on the wrist for not correcting their inherent lack of ability, the most glaring example being their laughable attempts at writing copy above a 3rd-grade reading level.
But I’ve learned a few lessons:
* You don’t have to be smart or have a particular talent to run things, and nothing tops an ability to point your finger a lot and maintain unblinking eye contact while explaining how you’re going to get what you want by having someone more capable do all the actual work.
* Millions of dollars in your pocket helps, and the ability to mine more of other people’s money so you can make more for yourself (without digging into your own stash, of course) is a real asset.
* Patronizing people who can do things you can’t is really the key to getting your work done. Bonus points for taking credit for someone else’s efforts.
* There’s nothing like telling a designer to “tart it up” that makes them feel like their work is really valuable.
* I think for the Christmas grab-bag there should be the same gift for everyone: a fucking thesaurus.
* When in doubt about your place in the pecking order, there’s the handy org chart that shows you, in full color, who’s managing who, and who answers to who, and who reports to who, and…
Up until now, I’ve thought that what I could do was more important than who I knew; but I find that most of the people I encounter who are just fucking clueless are where they are because of the bullshit they spew and who they know.

i totally agree with you! i think work is easier on dull people who are just happy being told what to do and don't have the ability to think!
