The Codfish Story
Along the coat of New England, one can see the boats coming and going as they bring in the famous codfish. There is a strong market for eastern codfish, especially in areas far from the coast, which posed a problem for shipping. At first, they tried freezing the codfish, then shipping them out, but freezing took away much of the flavor. So they tried shipping the codfish alive in tanks of seawater. This proved even worse. Not only was it more expensive, but the codfish still lost their flavor, as well as becoming soft and mushy. Finally, someone came up with the idea of placing the codfish in the tank of seawater with their natural enemy, the catfish. From the time the shipment left the ocean until it reached its destination, the catfish chased the codfish all around the tank. When the codfish arrived at the market, they were as fresh as when they were first caught. Neither the flavor nor the texture was affected. If anything, they were better than before.
I wonder how many of us have a “catfish” in our tanks. Maybe we live with one. Maybe it is a job situation. Could it be that God allows these “catfish” in our lives to keep our souls from getting soft, mushy, and tasteless? God’s word says, “consider pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that by the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4). Trials are allowed in our lives in order to mature us.
