| One Problem |
|
A very large problem for me living here in Addis is food. I eat a lot of healthy protein at home in the States but here I find myself living on carbs. And not so healthy carbs, might I add. Because I workout intensely I need the protein for rebuilding. In the past I've brought protein shakes but my bags were at the weight limit this time before I remembered I should pack some! The problem is that I don't like to see the raw meats and chicken in the stores and then cook them myself. I get grossed out and worry about how old it is! I have many expat friends that eat food from the meat cases and swear they are fine. I just don't know if the standards are up to par for safety. Don't get me wrong, it looks good and looks like the meat cases at home. I do buy the eggs and use the "egg test" to check for freshness but that sometimes freaks me out, too. When peeling them after boiling if they don't seem right, I toss them! Our housekeeper goes through ALL of our trash and is always bringing things back to us that we've thrown away. I hope she is not eating the eggs I have put in the garbage, but anything is possible here! We are eating a lot of canned tuna in spring water and like most of the packaged products, it is from some other country. I am so used to having food that I feel like I can trust the safety of it! But, I am adjusting and just finished some egg salad, which I eat almost every day at home. So far, I have not been sick and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can make this stay without pepto bismal or antibiotics. And I won't even get started on the fruits!
