NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Seattle Mariners acquired shortstop Jack Wilson and pitcher Ian Snell from the Pirates on Wednesday, sending Pittsburgh five players including former top draft choice Jeff Clement.
Seattle (52-48), who trail first-place Los Angeles by 7.5 games in the AL West and are 6.5 games back in the wild card race, sent weak-hitting shortstop Ronny Cedeno and minor league pitchers Nathan Adcock, Brett Lorin and Aaron Pribanic to the Pirates along with Clement.
The Pirates (43-57) are last in the NL Central, 10.5 games behind division-leading St Louis.
Wilson, 31, has the fourth highest fielding percentage among major league shortstops since 2006 and is a career .269 hitter. This season he was batting .267 with four homers and 31 runs batted in.
Snell, 27, started the season 2-8 with Pittsburgh but in six starts since being assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis he is 2-2 with a 0.96 ERA and 47 strike outs in 37 1/3 innings.
The 25-year-old Clement, hitting .288 with Triple-A Tacoma, did not meet expectations in parts of two major league seasons in Seattle, batting .237 in 219 at-bats with seven home runs.
Cedeno, 26, was hitting .167 for Seattle.
