Miley

Oh my god. I just realized a song I had been rocking out to the last couple of days was Miley Cyrus.

Please Please. let me explain... I really don't listen to pop. I'm much more of a country girl. I'll own up to being a fan of Taylor Swift's. The girl can write. She's 17 and she writes like it. I love the simplicity of her songs and they always bring up memories from high school I had forgotten. I don't act like I'm really into music or too cool for top 40. But I really only listen to top 40 on my way to work in the mornings. I need something to get me going and it usually accomplishes that.

But I can't stand Miley Cyrus. I don't think it's her fault, it just gets under my nerves that these little girls are trying to be her at way too young of an age. She just epitomizes my general pet peeve about sexuality in this country. We're a country that refuses to educate our children about sex, give them access to condoms or have open conversations on the subject. There is no distinction between the beauty of the human form and pornography. Too many PTA moms are almost militant about nudity, sexuality and don't realize that kids are having sex at younger and younger ages.
But these same women. The very same women will put their girls in low rise jeans with glitter on their butt, tight shirts, make up and basically club wear because it's cute. Have you ever watched Toddlers and Tiaras? These women first talk about how conservative they are and how "strong" their "family values" are and then in the next scene they're telling their 5 yr old to "shake their booty", blow kisses and prance around in a bikini. Really? But god forbid they hear the word sex. These are the moms that will wait in line all night so their kids can get Hannah Montana tickets but when she posed nude they flipped. Yeah - she's a teenager. She's gonna take her clothes off. I've seen the pictures. If I had to put them in a category - it would be art, not porn. And yeah, she was a little young. She was only 15 - but guess what YOUR 15 year old daughter is probably doing. MORE THAN HALF OF TEENS AGED 15- 19 ARE HAVING ORAL SEX. Guess what - your kids are more likely to have oral sex than intercourse.

But back to my point about Miley. She sold out. Not when she was a super star on the Disney channel. But she had a golden opportunity to use her "scandal" to turn it into a discussion between tweens and their parents about sex and she - and he PR team- dropped the ball. Your kids are going to have sex whether you talk to them or not. The question isn't will they, it's when and if they'll be safe about it.
