So everyone has a vice of some sort right? Or a slight obsession? For some it could be music, smoking, drinking, writing, or reading. Mine is SHOES!!!! I basically have what you could call a collection of shoes. If I were to sit down and count all of them it could easily reach 150 pairs. They mostly are Nikes...Dunks, Air Force 1's, and Jordans. There are also heels and wedges and boots but mostly sneakers cause they don't go out of style when the seasons change. Ok so this might sound ridiculous to some people or most people but I take pride in my "babies" and take very good care of them. I clean them periodically with a toothbrush and stuff the insides with insoles or old socks to keep them from losing their shape. How did this begin? You can blame that on my parents. From the time I was a little girl my mother always made sure I had the very best no matter what. That meant having on the latest shoes. For me it began as a way to stand out from everyone else and having my own identity. Having gone to catholic most of my life meant the whole school looked exactly the same but your shoes told people what kind of person you were. I was the girl with the coolest and newest shoes. Sometimes there would even be competitions between some of us to see who had the most or best shoes. Until I got into high school I was always on top. I then met people that had the same obsession as I did. Our parents just allowed it and bought us the shoes we wanted. Soon it became so popular that I began waiting in lines at 6 in the morning to guarantee myself that new pair of Jordans because they were guaranteed to sell out. I did this for years. Yes, I stood in line for 3 to 4 hours to make sure I got that pair of shoes and sometimes bought two. One pair to wear and one pair to just have. I later got a job at Niketown and realized that I could get my shoes at almost half off and would almost give back my paycheck to Nike. This is the period where I accumulated the most shoes. every two weeks on pay day i would buy two or three pairs. I loved the smell and feel of getting new shoes. Yeah, it's a little weird but it's my thing. My mother and grandmother had different taste in shoes but also had the same weird obsession. I guess it's in my blood. There was a time where it became so bad that I was using the last of my money to buy shoes and give up eating for a couple of days just so I could have that pair. I recognized that it was a problem so I decided to test myself and made a promise to myself that I would not buy a pair of shoes for 1 whole year. I actually went through with successfully. I started to realize that other things are just more important and I only have one pair of feet. I felt silly looking back at the way I spent my money and had worked so hard and all I had to show for it was my shoe collection. I actually went 1 year and 1 month without buying shoes but when a special pair came out for Halloween I had to get them. Yes, I bought them. It felt great but almost wrong at the same time. I decided to just keep it to a minimum and limit the amount of shoes I allow myself to buy. I say this now but since January I have gotten 6 pairs of shoes. Before you think anything....I went with 4 pairs of vans and two pairs of nikes....Not bad (to me) I have a great passion for shoes and that's just me. I'm not afraid to admit it and I'll be wearing a different pair to school everyday until the very end. |

I know exactly what you mean about the shoes. My mom too would always make sure that i had the best when i was younger and i remember looking at other peoples feet to see what kind of shoes they were wearing. I think when it starts at a young at, its something that sticks with you for a long time, like your almost programmed to like them. And your taste in what you like tells what kind of person you are. Your love for shoes will most likely be with you for the rest of your life and that, to me, is diffenately a part of your identity.
