| The Hobbit |
I have been described in many ways by many people. Some flatter, honestly or no, and some insult, but everyone seems to have an opinion about everyone else, and I suppose I'm not exempt from that.
On Halloween, I dressed for a party with friends. I was dressed as a Renaissance traveler - a random costume I threw together without much thought because I had the cape and furry boots and very little time to do anything else.
At the party, everyone assumed I was a Hobbit. It wasn't because of the way I acted or because I carried some Lord of the Rings-esque trinkett, but because I'm 5'2 and overweight. It felt like shit.
At first I was hurt, but played it off like it was funny. After a few people had made the comment, I even started acting like I meant to dress as a Hobbit.
I signed up on Sparkpeople.com today, intent on losing the weight and ensuring that it would never happen again. As I was filling out the profile and setting my goals, though, I was thinking about that damned Hobbit. I am a big fan of the Tolkein books, and I've read them more than once. Thinking about the stories and what they meant to me, I realized what a strong and determined, hearty and loving race the Hobbits are, and I've decided to embrace the Hobbit persona.
I still intend to lose the weight, and I have a plan to do so, but my login on Sparkpeople.com is The_Hobbit now, and I have addopted the persona of a Hobbit while I cope with the need to make certain changes in the way in which I'm living my life.
I will be every bit as certain and true, couragious, loyal, and willing, and totally fun-loving as any Hobbit ever was. And once I've lost the weight and I'm healthier, I will strive to maintain that mentality throughout the rest of my life.
I will make the insult into armour. I will hold the fire and let it warm me. I will laugh in the face of those who would put me down, and revel in their ignorance and cruelty, knowing it to be their own weakness, and not mine.
