My english essay on sex and the media.
Why Did Justin Have to Bring Sex-y Back?“A frank realization of how the media controls our young, innocent minds”

The media that teens are exposed to today has become more sexual and suggestive than ever. Nelly tells us there’s nothing wrong with promiscuous sex, the Pussy Cat Dolls tell us to “loosen up their buttons” and all the gangsters rap about one night stands with bitches and hoes. What ever happened to Shania Twain, the Spice girls, Jewel and Brandi and Monica? Their songs talked about the old issues that teenagers faced, for example in the song “The Boy is Mine,” Brandi and Monica discover that their boyfriend is cheating on them with the other girl. They fight over him in the beginning but later form an alliance at the end, and dump this guy’s sorry ass. Now if this song were to be released today, it would have gone like this; they find out he was cheating on them both, they would fight over him, and then both sleep with him again, maybe even all at once. The reality is that sex is becoming a more common thing among teenagers due to the media and there is less emphasis on solid relationships.

One hundred and fifty years ago, you found a partner, got to know each other, got married and then had sex (leading to lots of babies). Today it is totally acceptable for teenagers to date around, and sleep with their boyfriends (leading to lots of babies), which is why there are so many contraceptives on the market. The difference is, years ago people would never have had so many different condoms to pick from, if they had any at all. The pill is fairly new on the market, so they wouldn’t even have had access to this, which is why there where lots of children being born then, but now there is just no reason for an unwanted pregnancy.

The producers of these contraceptives conformed to the demand of today’s society, because if everyone on the earth only had sex for the purpose of forming a life, than there wouldn’t be any need for contraceptives. The reality is that people like sex. Period. And the media is making it more acceptable to be talked about and they are turning sex into causality. For that reason, Durex and Trojan companies are super rich and teens pop the pill every day. The use of contraceptives is very important if you’re a promiscuous girl, and gentlemen, if you plan on bringing sexy back, you better have a condom in your wallet. And if you’re going to Gwen Stefani’s sleep over, she doesn’t allow pajamas, as she tells us in the song titled “Yummy”, where she also states that sex and sugar is a flavor. I mean, who ever knew that?

The drama that teens face today is no longer who’s dating who, it is who is sleeping with whom? Relationships have a new status and “friends with benefits” is becoming more popular amongst these groups of teens. They are not looking for long term relationships, they are looking for Mr. or Miss right now, right this instant. This is a good thing considering how high today’s divorce rate is. Maybe our parents should have slept around a little more to get it out of their system when they were young, so that today daddy wouldn’t be sleeping with his receptionist and mommy wouldn’t be so hung up on the pool boy.

The fact is that media has taken away the morals and the romance of making love, by exposing sex in a more general manner, making it socially acceptable to do whoever, whenever and turning innocent statements into sexual advancements. Nicole from the Pussy Cat Dolls will “do whatever you like” as she states in her newest single, and Fergie is always talking about her London-Bridge going down and telling men that “if you don’t have no money take your broke ass home” Does this mean she’s a prostitute? It is just these kinds of questions that teens take into consideration, because if Fergie does it, than they can too! Teens automatically try to imitate these people by doing what they are telling them to do through the music they produce and the sultry videos they show on television. Stars set a high standard for what is “hot” these days especially in the music industry, and right now sex and sexuality sets the roof on fire.  Maybe we should call up Kelis and ask her to come put it out with her milkshake.
