| Everything *doesn't* happen for a reason. |
So this is my first-ever completely anonymous blog. I have others, but this one is just for me (and any random people out there who come across it).
Since this is a new era of self-expression, I feel blogging is a great way to vent and speak candidly without too many repurcussions.
Having said all that, here I go:
So I don't think everything happens for a reason, and I'm getting a little irritated every time I hear/see it somewhere. People like to hold onto the notion that "everything happens for a reason," but I think it's a weak excuse to accept all that life gives you. Hatred happens for a reason? Genocide? Oppression? Ignorance? Stupidity? I don't think so. I think that's a way of rationalizing the shit that happens in one's life.
I also think the whole "everything happens for a reason" is a way to make one feel less insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Without a god/deity/greater being, many feel there is little purpose to life. Even with my religious/spiritual uncertainty, I hesitate to believe in fate or destiny or whatever you want to call it. People feel, as they well should, unimportant and insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and adopting a hopeful dogma is one way of dealing with it. I personally fnd it weak and unthinking.
Let's be a little smarter, people. Even if there *is* a purpose behind everything, don't take injustice and ignorance sitting down. Too many people don't speak up when something is wrong. Too many people float by fairly easily in life, yet complain the entire way. Yes, life can be ugly and raw and depressing, but only to a point. There needs to come a time when you say, "Enough. Let's enjoy this and fix things together."
(Sorry, this tirade is a bit scattered.)
As an agnostic-leaning-twoard-atheism, I still retain the tiniest glimmer of optimism. I see the art, music, and love that people create and share, and it makes me hopeful. (Of course, I too clearly recognize the deplorable ways people treat each other, as well.)
When I see remarkable patterns in nature, I am hopeful. For example, I find it astounding that a human's circulatory system, lightning, rivers, and trees, and tree leaves share the same basic design (one or two large "branches" that break out into smaller tribuaries). Did that design happen for a reason, or is it merely evolutionarily developed because of efficiency?
Well, I suppose I shall be off and be productive for a while...
Anyone is welcome to comment- respectfully- at any time. Thank you.
