I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
For anyone who is not familiar, Vancouver is a breathtaking city by the oceans in a temperate rain forest surrounded by mountains. We have a laid back lifestyle and flop around in shorts for 8-9 months of the year - wearing socks with birkenstocks and fleece. It's great!
Contrary to the beliefs of Canada, we are not covered in snow. In fact, Vancouver gets maybe 2 weeks of snow a year but we do get a lot of ice. With the ice and the mountains we are quite hilarious to watch drive. That may be because so many people won't put on winter tires - that would cut into the budget for our abundant fruits and vegetables we have available. And granola.
I love where we live.
But to live in lotus land we do have to suffer a lot of clouds and rain. A LOT of rain! It rains about 9-10 months a year. That doesn't stop us from wearing our obligatory shorts - we'll just put on a waterproof jacket over our fleece. It makes our trees green and our lakes abundant. And it puts snow on the tops of the mountains. But though the weather is warm it seldom gets too hot. And the rain makes some grumpy and they wish for better weather. Last week was around 18-20 degrees (c) and admittedly everyone was ready for some sunshine. All the month of June was whining "When is summer coming?" "It's ridiculous it is so cold" and my favourite "I must of blinked and missed summer."
So this last weekend when we were blasted with a sudden rise of temperature to 35 degrees, people went nuts. Just nuts! Ghost white bodies running around half naked that end up a bright pink at the end of the day - then the clouds come back and lock the heat in and all you hear is "It's toooo hot! OMG I can't stand it". And "I can't take it". But with my irish colouring I stay in the shade with lots of water and am a little more used to discomfort... and burning. I did go out for 5 minutes and came back with a red face - and that was with SPF 30!
But what kills me most is coming in this Monday morning and listening to all the whiners from last week complaining about how unfair it is that we go from cold to hot too quickly. And that their fans did not work. And they need stronger sunblock (put it on more than once a day people!) And how nice it is to get back into the air conditioned office.... What????
So I think this is what we pay REALLY high taxes for. Not the beautiful clean city we are blessed to live in (and should be grateful for). Not the stunningly intelligent government which rules us (guffaw). But just to be able to complain and never be happy about the weather. "It's too hot! It's too cold! It's been raining two weeks!"
And my other fave "We need rain! It's been two weeks without and our grass is dying!"
That is why I LOVE where I live. I LOVE it.
Do you love where you are?
