I am so angry today I want to punch something. I was "confronted" by the office manager today regarding my "extended lunches and breaks". The thing is - she's not my boss because I work in the marketing department which is separate from the office, AND she has NO IDEA what my job duties are.
Usually after I go on my 15 min break - I stay in the warehouse and cut the product tags I printed. So she might not see me at my desk right away due to my responsibilities which allows me to get away from my desk once in a blue moon. Anyway - after her rather abrasive confrontation, I told her that I disagree but "okay" I will take what she said into consideration.
Not even 30 min later, I caught her on 2 separate occassions talking about our little discussion with other employees. I can understand coming to an employee with an issue to be cleared up - but then to go talk about it and what my response was with other employees is just unprofessional and innappropriate! I am so angry!!! Luckily I have my annual review tomorrow with the VP. I am not a sheep, I will not be bullied - and I WILL discuss this with him.
I am sick of the comments and the whispering. I am sick of being degraded because I have a college degree and they don't. I have such a frickin' headache now I want to cry. Damnit - just give me something to punch and kick.

As an FYI, once you tell your manager about the bullying, he/she has to do something about it. It has to be documented by law if they want to stay Compliant. (If your company is public, this is especially important) I would nip it in the bud ASAP. If I were you, I'd read anything on bullies and the dynamic - that's what I had to do. You'll find that you are targeted BECAUSE you have a college degree - you threaten this office manager because clearly, you are doing a good job. It's not your fault but it is what it is. Targets generally have something special about them - either they have a good work ethic, do an outstanding job or do a job the bully can't - maybe you are better looking and going places and this office manager knows she's at the end of the road as far as her career goes. The common denominator in all of this is - the target inadvertently shows the bully what she ISN'T. You probably reveal her shortcomings. Now, what to do about it. Stand up for yourself to your boss, to her - look her in the eye. Be professional and stern - let her know that her behavior is beneath you and won't be tolerated - make sure it's written up in HR (although don't expect HR to back you). Keep documenting. Your goal is to show that you've done everything humanly possible and she hasn't stopped. Hostile work environments DO hold up in court but you have to show that you made the effort to stop it yourself.
Peace.
