| for the geeks |
Is that an insult?
I often wonder why so many people use the term “geek” as an insult. To call a person a geek is somehow meant to make that person feel inadequate in some way and of course to make them feel uncool!
This makes me laugh, as anyone who is ACTUALY a geek would take this so-called insult as a compliment. Look at Wil Wheaton for example he’s a geek and proud of it. I ask myself what is so bad about playing video games or roll play games.
Of course the insult may not be referring to those sorts of geeks they may be talking about the sort that study hard or are smart! (oh how insulting to called smart) By now I bet your thinking that I myself must be some sort of geek and that is my point, but no that’s not the case at all. My point is that I myself love to play video games and I do think studying is ok depending on the topic. I love star gate and star treak and many other sci-fi things. However I do still go to clubs with my friends and have a life outside my feeble attempt to blog.
Being a girl I find it almost impossible to have any female friends who have similar interests in my love for gaming and sci-fi, and Living in Scotland it almost impossible to go to any sort of half decent convention. These may be the things that stop me from actually being a proper geek.
I think that if a person finds joy in roll playing games or talking to people through headsets online all day or even becoming a mythical creature and making up a new name for your friends on world of war craft, then good for you at least you don’t find joy in killing innocent people or drinking your sad life away like all those “cool” people.
