 Where is Patrick Henry When You Need Him?



"The millions of people, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations, and who will raise up friends to fight our battles for us. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. Besides, sir, we have no election. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable--and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come.
It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace-- but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"



This is part of a speech given by one of our founding fathers Patrick Henry. Henry gave this speech to the Virginia delegates on March 23, 1775. Henry understood that war with Britain was inevitable. He was pushing for a vote to supply the Virginia militias to fight against the British army in the colonies. With Henry there was no middle ground. Some in Vir ginia at the time wanted to sacrifice some of their liberties that the patriots were fighting for and negotiate with Britain. They wanted to negotiate to avoid struggle, hardship, and war. Henry did not believe that peace without liberty was worth it. He did not believe that safety without liberty was worth it. He did not believe health without liberty was worth it. Patrick Henry believed the choice was liberty or death.

I bring this to your attention to ask one question. Are we like Patrick Henry today? Or are we willing to give up some of our liberties for things like safety, easiness, and health. Unfortunately there is a large part of our population that is not like Patrick Henry. The example is the government healthcare insurance proposed by Barack Obama and others in Congress. In order for the government to force everyone to have health insurance, they have to take away liberty. In order for insurance companies to be required to cover everyone, they have to take away liberty. In order for a government panel to be able to dictate what kind of treatment is best for a patient with government healthcare, they have to take away liberty. In order for the government to make it more efficient they will try and make law s telling you what you cannot eat, cannot drink, cannot smoke, and cannot participate, which takes away liberty. In order to pay for this massive program the government will have to take money from those who do not have government healthcare, which is their private property because the fruits of your labor are your private property, and redistribute it to those who do not pay taxes and have government healthcare, they have to take away liberty because liberty and private property are inseparable.

We have a choice. We can go down this road and allow the government to get its foot in the door and have a great amount of influence on your very being and health, or we can keep our liberties, create free market solutions to the problem, and continue to live in a society where we the people take care of ourselves and the government merely secures our ability to do that. The choice is yours.

Write those letters now; call your friends and tell them to write them. If you don’t, this program I promise you will pass just as surely as the sun will come up tomorrow and behind it will come other federal programs that will invade every area of freedom as we have known it in this country. Until, one day, as Normal Thomas said we will awake to find that we have socialism. And if you don’t do this and if I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.”-Ronald Reagan on National Healthcare
