| Unheard Cries, a short story
|
|
|
The young girl sat hudled in the corner of the room, as she did every day, as she had done for many years now, more than she could remember and for longer than she was probably even aware of. Her shift was greying and rather dirty, and she held on to an aged looking teddy bear, her hair in pig tails, and dirty marks on her cheeks, most likely from the rivers of tears that she had cried, once in a while she stopped crying long enough to wonder why no one spoke to her anymore, where all her friends had gone she didn't know, and why was there only one person who even seemed to notice that she even existed, the nanny, she was afraid of the nanny, Mrs Wren, her name sounded gentle why wasn't she? the little girl often pondered. She had forgotten her name many moons before, when everyone stopped calling her by it, no one had asked for her name, and eventually, one day, she realised that she didn't know it anymore, on the days when she managed to pull herself up and play with her bear, she had named herself 'Teddy's girl', she kinda liked that name, but those happy days rarely came anymore.
Then three people walked into the darkened room, they were carrying bags of this and that, they placed candles all around and lit them one by one, a glass was placed into the centre of the large round mahogany table that shone in the candle light, a board covered with lettering and numbers was also placed on the table, the young girl looked on in awe and slight fear.
She studdied the three, strangely dressed people, one of them, a woman, wore blue trousers, which seemed odd to the girl, as she had never seen a Lady wearing trousers before, the woman looked kind and held a gentle smile, she seemed to be in charge of the others as they were both doing as she told them.
The other two were both men, they looked almost like brothers, except one was completely bald, while the other had thick black hair and looked slightly mean, the little girl backed away into the corner, stiffling her tears in hope that they wouldnt see her there, she watched as they placed strange objects that must in her opinion be magical, as they clicked and flashed and made other strange noises, one was placed on some kind of three legged stand, and the other was placed on a chair near the mahogony table and the flashing part was aimed towards it.
The large door to the room suddlenly flew open, scaring the girl more, and in ran two children followed by a rather harrased looking man, the children ran to the lady throwing themselves at her legs, cuddling and giggling, the woman bent down to them and hugged them, kissing each on the tops of their heads before the man told them it was time to leave mummy to her work and to say goodbye, everyone got a kiss, including the man and he left with the two children again.
This intreagued the girl and she slowly walked out of her corner, looking almost smiling at the lady, once she felt she was close enough to watch without being discovered she settled herself down behind a large old chair.
She watched as the three made sure that all the curtains were closed tight and that there were only a few candles lit, they fussed around the magical objects then sat at the table together, the woman asked the others if they were ready, they both nodded and the three held hands together, creating a circle.
The girl watched as the woman closed her eyes and her head fell forward, she smiled thinking the lady had fallen asleep, after a few minutes like this, one of the men stood up, picking a bell from a bag, he began circling the table and ringing the bell, it was a pretty noise, the little girl giggled
"Shhh....did you hear that?" the woman spoke, silence fell, the little girl tried hard to stay quiet and listen for the mysterious noise
"It sounded like a laugh..like a childs laugh" she said, the little girl, startled ran back to her corner...
"Listen.. that sounded like footsteps" said the bald man, the girl sat down as quietly as she could, careful not to make a sound..
" We should take the camera's round the room before we go any further" the other man said "Lets just be sure there is definately no one else here" the others agreed with him, so they picked up two other magical things, the little girl realised these must be the camera's they had mentioned, and she watched them walk around the room, the light from the camera's illuminating darkened corners as they went, the woman spoke again
"That sound seemed to come from here before" she gestured toward the girls corner hiding place, but it was too late to make a run for it as the woman was almost apon her, she held her knee's tight to her chest, and burried her head.
as the woman reached the dark corner, the light from the camera lit the area quite well, one of the men walked up behind the woman, "There is nothing there" he said in a gruff voice, the little girl was saddened by these words and she looked up toward the woman, she felt herself welling up to cry, she tried to hold it in, as much as she was sad that they were ignoring her, she didn't want to make them angry by making a noice crying, but as hard as she tried, one solitary tear fell from her eye and rolled slowly down her cheek...
"Guys! Look at this! " the woman exclaimed, "There was an orb, it was about there "she pointed at the screen on the back of the camera" And it seemed to drop slowly to the floor and disapear!" she was excited.
" We will have to watch it back later" the dark haired man said "come on, lets get back to it, there is no one here"
The three of them walked back over to the table, the woman seemed to lag behind, she kept looking back at the dark corner, with a puzzled look on her face.
The little girl got to her feet, she was a little angry now, why was everyone ignoring her, they must have seen her there, she started to walk toward them, she was headed for the woman, she seemed so kind, how could she ignore her when she had been so kind to her own children moments earler, she came to a stop as the sound of the bell began again, she looked at the woman now, ringing the pretty bell, walking around the table
"If there is anyone here with us in this room, or in this beautiful house please come now and talk to us, make your pressence known to us, we are not here to do you any harm or mock you in any way, we would just like to talk to you" she continued to say these things for a few moments, then sat down with the men at the table, the girl seeemed confused, 'Who do they want to talk to?' she thought, she felt brave now, 'Perhaps they want to talk to me!' she smiled and skipped over to the table.
"Hello" she said smiling, no one looked at her or replied "HELLO?" she spoke louder now, still nothing, this time the girl didn't feel sad, she felt angry again "There is no one else here at the moment, why don't you talk to me?" still they ignored her, remembering how she wasn't really supposed to speak to visitors, she backed away a little, looking around her nervously, there was a loud bang, that seemed to startle the three at the table as well as the little girl, who looked even more nervous now, she looked over at the small door on the opposite side of the room, which flew open, making the woman scream, "Would you like to talk to us? can you make that sound again" the woman asked, the bald man rushed over and closed the door, "Can you open the door again for us? please? " he asked
The little girl began to scream as she saw Mrs Wren appear as if from the now closed door...
"Come and sit down" the woman said to the man, "Lets see if we can get anything else"
The little girl ran to the woman at the table "Help me please help me, I am in such trouble now because i spoke to you" tears streamed down her reddened cheeks, but the woman ignored her still
"If there is someone here with us, perhaps you need our help, please let us know, make a sound, move this glass on the table, tell us what we can do, show yourself" the woman repeated
"Yes, please.." the girl pleaded, "Help me please" she was staring in terror at Mrs Wren who was walking towards her with a look of Hell in her eyes, "Oh please help me she cried" she looked around for some way to get the womans attention, she reached for the glass on the table, but it was stuck fast down, she pushed and pulled with all her strength, but it wouldn't budge"Thats not fair!!" she screamed, how can i move it when it is stuck down!" Mrs Wren reached the table too, she picked up the glass and threw it across the room, making the three stand up and scream in shock, Mrs Wren looked at the girl, angrier than she had ever seen her before "How dare you talk to these people! they don't want to talk to the likes of you young lady!" she screeched, the little girl ran to the kind woman, clutching her legs, still the woman took no mind of her, Mrs Wren followed her, she grabbed the childs arm, pulling her away "Do you think they want you to dirty them with your filthy self? come with me" she pulled the girl away..
Weakly the three people sat back down at the table, the woman spoke once more "We know you are here with us, please try to talk to us, if you talk to us we might be able to help you" as Mrs Wren dragged the girl off toward the door she entered by the girl cried out "YES! I am here, I need you to help me!"
"Please, if you just make another banging sound, or move this new glass for us, just let us know you are with us"
"I am here!!! help me"
"Any noise at all, can you make a knocking sound? perhaps you can actually talk to us?"
"Please, why are you ignoring me, what have I done wrong?" wailed the girl
"Perhaps you can move something else in the room, one of the curtains perhaps"
The little girl just sobbed as Mrs Wren dragged her out of the room, and they were gone, the little girls cries were gone, silence fell apon her world,
"I don't think we are going to have any more luck in here" said the woman, "Shall we try in that room?" she pointed toward the door that had opened itself a few minutes ago
"Yeah, why not," said the haired man "There isn't much happening in here now is there" so they packed up their equipment and moved into the next room, perhaps to torment another lost soul or spirit.............

Ok i should explain this one, a long time ago, I watched an American documentary about a so called Medium, she had stumbled apon this low frequency recording thing that Merlyn may be able to explain better than me, she was assisted by a sound expert and wandered around haunted locations calling out, offering help, asking questions, but it wasn't until she got back to their office and the sound guy took hours changing the frequency of his recordings that they could hear the replies from beyond the grave, some of the voices were quite sad and it was awful to listen to, weather it was real or not it was terrable that perhaps this woman was offering false hope to these souls without considering what the truth might actually be, i then watched things like most haunted with a different frame of mind, i could imagine people/spirits responding in their own world/dimension to all that was being asked of them, yet no one really heard, i imagined that perhaps the mediums see and hear things, but what if what they heard was not the voices of those asking for help, this story had been bubbling in my mind for years, Sorry Merlyn if it made you feel bad i didn't mean it to, i just wanted to sugest in story a possibility that perhaps no one has thought of before.
not meant to offend i promise xxxxxx

Missmarie, you've not offended me as I don't work that way (thankfully), however you have tapped into an aspect that bugs me immensely, and I find it hard to resolve.
Okay... firstly there's your Most Haunted approach, which just angers me. Not only do they fake many things you see, but they make a mockery of any spirit that may be present.
Okay, so they have a medium who may be able to 'offer a way out', but you so rarely actually see that being done, that i wonder if it is half the time.
They go for the scream, the promotion of their already inflated egos and fill further their already inflated wallets. GRRRRR!
Then you have the 'experiencers'.. those paranormal groups all over the country who like to go along, usually with a few members of the public in tow, to experience hauntings. they rarely offer help and even more rarely know how to facilitate that help anyway. I call them the 'scream teams'. They do tours and are the ones that people like Most Haunted crew go to to learn about a location.
They like being in the limelight, using spirit as a stepping stone to notoriety.. These people can and have become extremely angry at the prospect of people like me achieving clearance. They WANT, nay, NEED their resident ghosts. Without them, they're nothing. GRRR! (again)
I belong to a team of people who share an interest in the paranormal, we all have a shared vision, to bring about a clearer understanding of the paranormal to people who are experiencing it in their own homes or workplaces, taking as much recording evidence as we can so that we understand what we're dealing with, and I am there to offer passage.
I say offer, but what I do is open a passage to source and bring about clearance of all spirit who wish to move on at that time. I'm very sensitive to children, having cleared an old workhouse, I understand the fear of children and what it feels like, long before they are asked to communicate. But pretty much I am able to make a connection and achieve return for them.
What I do with my dvr machine (digital voice recorder), is not only take a record of the visit, but I use it as a way for the very shy or fearful to communicate. I tell them right at the start that if they can't find the courage to step forward on that visit, then I will return to them as I'll scan the dvr for any indication of need.
I will then either return in person in as few hours as I can manage or I will work from my home with them as soon as I realise the need.
I always keep my promises, and they know that. :)
What bothers me is that my own team is leaning too far to the scientific, wanting the same stuff to be there next time, so they can map it further, and I'm getting to the point of leaving because I'm not being allowed to do my chosen work (I do anyway, either silently or from home)... I don't see why just because you can make a few lights flash up by asking questions, it's okay to walk away again!
Spirit are not circus acts, especially children. Sometimes I think these people need to put themselves in spirits' shoes!
Rant over.
I'm fine with your thoughts missmarie, they're extremely valid, they just touched a raw nerve, that's all.
Love you Mwahhhh! xx

Thank you Merlyn for that wonderful explaination, as i say its bugged me for a while, and i thought of this story a couple of weeks ago, i was actually tempted a long time ago (if i had the tech no-how) to take some footage from most haunted and add an overlay of something similar to this story, and then maybe showing people what actually might be happening on another level, but i wouldn't even know where to start on something like that, but it would have to be slightly shocking i suppose to make the 'scream teams' stop and think about how their actions may affect spirit.
Love you too
Mywaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! xx

Hey marie, sorry it took a few days to get to this. Also read through the comments and see the points made, it is a sad thought to consider. And although the story was quite sad, it was briliant hun. Great job giving us another point of view on this.
