| The War in Iraq argument |
Oh yes, I'm going there !
I hear this argument all the time (well, at least several times a week). I hear it, because people do not bother to do their homework before spouting off whatever the latest talking head happens to be saying. So, I am going to attempt to set the record straight. But please, by all means, do not take my word for it. Let this be a jumping off point for you and go and research the facts for yourself.
Here goes:
The actual basis for going into Iraq was U.N. Resolution 660 concerning the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. A decision was made, under U.N. Resolution 661 that Iraq had failed to comply with the terms and conditions of 660. (1990). U.S. led forces entered the Persian Gulf based upon U.N. Resolution 678, which authorized the use of force against Iraq.
Saddam Hussein eventually signed a treaty ( the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty), and allowed U.N. inspectors to come in and inspect "specific" areas. He also agreed to destroy any weapons of mass destruction (WMD's), including biological and chemical weapons. A short time later, after declaring Iraq free of nuclear weapons, the inspectors learned that Iraq was about a year to 18 months away from having a nuclear capable weapon. It was at this time that Saddam Hussein refused further inspections. His support of terrorism and terrorist sympathizing countries, was more than enough to lead the U.N., the U.S., and their allies to believe Saddam Hussein to be a legitimate threat to the peace and safety of the middle east and the world.
In 2002, the U.N. passed Resolution 1441. It essentially called for Iraq to cooperate fully with U.N. inspectors, so that they could verify that he had no WMD's or long range missiles. After much "back and forth," they were allowed in, but could not verify the destruction location of the prior chemicals, biological agents, and nuclear components. Although no specific WMD working devices were found, there were remnants whose age could not be determined. After repeated attempts to verify the information they were given, and after ample time for any chemicals or components to possibly be moved out of the country, the U.S., acting on the basis of Resolution 678 (which had never been rescended), felt we were running out of time to put a stop to further advancement of WMD's in Iraq. In addition to global peace and safety, the oppression of the Iraqi people was an additional goal of the invasion by allied troops. "Human Rights abuses" was the exact phrasing given. We entered Iraq in 2003 under this Resolution.
I have read numerous conspiracy theories about the invasion of Iraq. "It was for oil" - FALSE , if that were true, we would not have been paying $4.50 for a gallon of gas this summer !! That is just one of the many ignorant arguments I have heard or read. "GW did it to make brownie points." - FALSE, with all the opposition to it, what possible points did he gain ??
Someone told me just yesterday that "One sniper could have taken care of Saddam. We didn't need to send out troops over there." Oh really ?? To that I ask... just how many sons do you suppose Saddam was grooming to take his place someday ? And do you not think that he had plenty of "loyal followers" willing to step in at the moment of his death and continue his plans ?
The mostly liberal media would have the public believe that we have done horrible things and made no progress. Yadda, yadda, yadda. The fact is, that every soldier who has come home has stated what great things had been accomplished over there for the people. They were returning to a sense of normalcy they had not known. A life of peace and stability without fear.
Unfortunately we lost precious lives to liberate a people and to ensure safety of all concerned. All those lives lost were heroes. Each and every one of them. They died defending freedom. Not just our own freedom, but the new freedom of the Iraqi people.
With all that being said, this was NOT a war of convenience or for the spoils to be gained. It has cost us thousands of lives and billions of dollars. It was the right thing to do. Now, if that makes you angry or makes you feel bad.... go hug a tree ! But stop saying that "Bush lied about WMD's." That's the real lie the left really wants everyone to believe. And with the majority of the media in their pocket and this Nirvana ideology, they got what they wanted from a good portion of this country - ignorance. Let this be a lesson... Don't believe everything you hear or read. Do your homework and check your facts. Don't just quote a tv personality or your favorite tree hugging movie star. They are actors people !! They do NOT live in the real world. They sit in their manisions, driving their fancy cars, spending butt loads of money on useless crap, while "we" pay hard earned money to see their movie or buy their CD's. They are untouched by the things that you and I have to deal with. Just like the majority of the Washington elite (both dem and repub). So, think for yourself !! Use COMMON SENSE !!! Stop being a puppet for the government. Ah, the government... I will get to that one in another blog.
