| Midnight at a Train Station |
|
I wasn’t exactly sure what I was doing at a train station at 12:26 am except running from my problems. In 7 ½ minutes I will be boarding a train to Florence where I will catch my final flight home. I will be leaving Italy behind, too bad I couldn’t leave the bad memories with it. A few feet away from me a man violently pushed a woman to the ground. Her young son helped her up and they shamefully walked toward me. It was hard to feel sorry for yourself when a woman and her son where begging for money from strangers at a train station. I had already given her my last four dollars and fifty four cents but she was making her way back to me. “Sorry!” I said knowing she did not understand me, “I don’t have any more money.” I reached into my bag and pulled out a small stuffed orca whale and handed it to her son. She smiled and moved on to the next person. I looked down at my watch, it was 12:28 am. Only 5 minutes left. The woman in front of me kept rearranging her belongings. She had a brand new toaster and fondue set with her, probably gifts for whoever she was on her way to see. I liked distracting myself with the people around me, it made the time go by faster. There was a young girl near the magazine rack trying too hard to get the attention of a slightly older boy. She was asking him questions about a magazine with a mustang on the cover. I didn’t understand most of the conversation because my Italian is horrible. I noticed he had on a motorcycle jacket with Ortega written across the back. If he owns a Harley then the poor girl may have some competition on her hands. I glanced back down at my watch, only 2 minutes left. I picked up my bags and headed for the platform, I can’t wait to be on my way.
