It seems those people that love me love to tease me. Hence the name
marcopolo. It all started with a flood... and innocently enough, searching
for an alternate route to work that did not involve boats, barges, fishing
waders or the imminent loss of life. As I traversed the backroads
searching for a way into town after coming out of the holler, my daughter-
in-law, Windy aka mongoliangirl, gasped into the phone.....
- "OH MY GAW-W-WD... HE'S MARCOPOLO"
Well...... I guess I am. THE ORIGINAL Marco Polo was an explorer... an
adventurer extrordinaire. I guess that sums up my life as well. It has been an
adventure. Replete with thrills, chills, dusty country roads, hot and humid
summer days, fishin in a farm pond with a cane pole as a boy, and years
later in gin clear stream in Alaska with a $600 flyrod and ten pound Sockeye,
-30 below in the northwoods, languishing in love, writhing in the pain of
ending(s) (a few), drunk on beer and whiskey, high on pot, low on downers,
wanna feel anything but what I feel, wild women and women not so wild,
sawed off shotguns (I was a legend in my own mind), condos and cabins,
bird dogs and bloodhounds, a beater '63 Chevy pickup with rusted out
floorboards and a new SUV, gettin religion and losing it on at least two
occasions, good friends and bad examples, suicide, sin, recovery and
salvation from the serpent we call addiction. A fire in my belly that all the
booze and dope in the world couldn't put out. Lord knows I tried. I guess that
about sums it up. Oh, and one other thing... children that love me in spite of
myself. Twenty six years of insanity and 27 years of recovery... some of it
not so sane, but thats another story. In the end, all things balance out,
including me. Not as whole as I wanna be... but certainly better than I used
to be. Thats me. marcopolo. Adventurer extrordinaire in my own right...
which was almost universally wrong.
Now.... dont get me wrong.... it hasnt all been crazy insane. Some of it has
been down right peaceful and serene... like the little cabin I live in. Well, I call
it a cabin. Its a modified A frame that kinda looks like an appalachian style
cabin. Small, cozy... nestled right into the bosom of a hill, in the bottom of an
Ozark holler, surrounded by trees, a gazzillion birds (46 species at last
tally), at least one bobcat, four squirrels, four chipmunks and Lord knows
what else. I share my little cabin with this woman that loves me... and I love
her... Miss Junie. We've heard rumors and murmors of wolves, panthers
and bears. Miss Junie and I sit on the deck, sipping our iced latte's and
watch the birds at the feeders. Lovely.
... And then there is this donkey that lives down the road... His name? A
name that any self respecting Ozark hills long eared, slack jawed beast of
burden would be proud to claim... Romeo. Not Clyde, Jack, Beau, Burt, Billy,
Sam or any of a thousand names that are befitting an animal of his breeding,
styling and heritage... and I understand he came with a price tag of $25 or
something like that. And a bag of feed thrown into the mix if I recall. I just
cant remember if the donkey came with the feed or if the proud new owner
paid it as a cash plus deal, not uncommon in any Ozark holler. But I am sure
somebody got a bag of feed and Romeo got a new home with proud owners.
So I ask myself... What's in a name? marcopolo and Romeo. But what are
the odds of both of us living here in this holler just down the road from one
another?

Marcopolo! Indeed, you are completely full of it...full of ADVENTURE that is! And I sure am glad you are in a part of your adventure that has you and your sweet Miss Junie right down the road. Because I cannot imagine very many weekends with out the two of you. And I also cannot imagine Romeo not having his dearly beloved Marcopolo down the road to bray to either! Love you (and, I assure you, it is not love that is about being in spite of anything. It's just love)

Are you the the same Marco Polo who starred in the adult feature "Make 'em hollar in the holler"?
