Sometimes I'm out there in the world, going hither and yon and I see things, patterns of behavior, that really, truly baffle me.
For example, you're standing and waiting for the elevator and the call button is already pressed and visibly lit, but every new person who walks over has to press the button as well, as though this will somehow speed up the process, which it won't. Or you're on the elevator, someone gets on, and they press the already lit "L" button, again, for seemingly the same reason.
Huh? Is this a basic lack of understanding in how elevators work? Or is this some bizarre compulsion? Let's put this one to rest...pressing the elevator buttons over and over has NO effect on the speed of service. It's basically just like a doorbell, telling it to come to you. Once it's got the message, it comes when it comes, in a certain order based on whatever other calls it's gotten. Make sense?
And while we're at it...is everyone so ridiculously gripped with OCD nowadays that a Blackberry or cell phone must ALWAYS be in the palm of the hand, so that at any given point when there's a moment of having to stand still, texts and email MUST MUST MUST be checked??? I mean seriously, I've witnessed this now when people are waiting for elevators, food, to cross the street, while driving and sitting at stoplights, while driving and NOT sitting at stoplights, WHILE SUPPOSEDLY WATCHING A FUCKING MOVIE!!! Yep, it's pretty much normal now for people to silence their cell phone and Blackberries and iPods, and how lovely of you all, but to instead text and email like idiots all throughout the film. People, WE CAN SEE THE BRIGHTLY LIT SCREENS!!! And it's fucking annoying! And worse, it points to some very unhealthy shit going on societally and in terms of attention span, presence and the ability to focus.
It's like everyone is entirely too scatttered to ever just be where they are, fully present, totally calm and still, happy to just stand there and BE. Do you guys have any idea how unhealthy and draining this is? It fragments your energy, exposes you to the unhealthy radiation of these devices more than is necessary and in the end it's just rude to everyone else around you. We don't all want to hear your phone calls or see your phones lighting up all over the damn movie theaters while we're trying to enjoy the show. Do you get how unbelievably rude it is to be in a grocery or checkout line while talking to someone else and not even give the checker your full attention for the 60 odd seconds it would take? I've seen places now that have signs stating that people on cell phones and such will not be helped, and I applaud that. It's repulsive to me, the level of disassociative society we have DEvolved into.
You can enjoy your benefits of modern technology without disconnecting yourself from the human race, and the irony of this is that while you're out there insisting you be reachable and either talking on the phone, emailing or texting at ALL times, you're completely missing out on the chance to connect to LIVE human beings all around you. I seldom see people going for walks or running errands now where they are just on their own, quiet, thinking, walking, enjoying their solitude. Nope, now it's drive while Bluetoothing, walk while texting, run errands while chirping away on your cell phone.
Seriously, in all honesty...this is borderline psychotic behavior. I'm wondering if there are other aliens like me out there who enjoy running errands while just listening to good music in the car, thinking, talking to live beings, looking around and just appreciating what little nature is still around me...the little things that keep you present. For all of the popularity I see with things like yoga and tai chi and pilates, all of which require focus and presence on ONE thing, becoming moving meditation, I see very little of that making one iota of difference in how most people are living their lives and relating to the world. And no wonder more and more people, younger and younger as well, are downing overpriced sugary high octane coffee beverages...their minds and bodies must be so sapped of energy from this frantic mind chattering pace they're all keeping every day...and I hear so many people complain about insomnia all the time...this isn't a mystery. When you amp yourself up on caffeine and sugar and overstimulate your mind, expecting it to do 14 things at once all the time, how can you expect it to just stop and shut down at night?
How can you really be enjoying your life when you're not even HERE for it?
Perhaps I belong in some cave in Wales or living with monks in the Himalayas or something, but as I look around me every day and watch the frantic, obsessive compulsive behavior that's become the norm...it's frustrating, baffling and ultimately, heartbreaking. We have heaven right here on earth, I promise you. So instead of rushing through life on an adrenaline high, with it all passing you by in a blur, possibly waiting for paradise after your time here is finished...what if...just imagine...what if THIS IS HEAVEN, and you've chosen to speed dial your way through it all? I suppose it's a choice. Free will. But it's not my choice, and I wish I could find a way to be surrounded by other people who feel the same way. That the only thing that's real and worth our precious moments, is NOW. And if you stop and literally smell the roses, which I highly recommend as a quick and easy way of snapping back into your bodies and getting out of your heads, you might just find that life is so much....more.
that's all.
