| lights out for ONE whole hour...seriously? |
Sometimes I'm astounded by the stupidity of our race, and that takes some doing because I'm not a big fan of humanity lately. But when I heard about this whole campaign to turn out the lights everywhere for one whole hour to symbolize some massive movement towards suddenly caring about the planet we've raped and ravaged since we first discovered our egos, I was torn between laughter and anger. This reminds me of the bullshit "Hands Across America" endeavor where everyone was supposed to gather and hold hands to create some giant chain around the world to symbolize supporting other humans who were starving. Yeah, that was a big frickin deal right up until it happened, then within about 5 minutes it was yesterday's trend, old news, never heard a peep about it again.
And while I imagine that if the entire world shuts everything down for one hour - which in actually would wreak havoc so you KNOW that won't actually happen right? - I suppose it could save some energy...enough to give us just slightly more rope with which to hang ourselves. And destroying ourselves is what we do best so I'm all for that, but this incredible planet we live on did not ask for that and I think Mother Earth is about over us. I would be. We're like fleas on a dog...enough already. And imagine a beautiful canine covered in fleas that mass produce, suck her dry and then decide to make amends when she's already near death by ceasing their blood assault for a whole hour! Wouldn't that turn everything around and make it all ok?!
Uh, no.
This is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard...living in LA, that's a bold statement.
If you really give a shit, do something meaningful to help ease the burden every single day of your life. Do something selfless with the same gustor and zeal with which you do selfish things. You don't have to be a monk, living by candlelight and foresaking all comforts. But to continue to create landfills of plastic bags and bottles and thenf igure you're karmically covered cause you flipped the lights on Saturday afternoon for a while, when you likely wouldn't have them on anyway (one hopes) in daylight...just doesn't add up.
Honestly, humans will buy into any slick add campaign.
Ah, and here's a recent addition to this blog- an green living guerrilla friend of mine sent me this link to a fabulous article that echoes my feelings on this:
