I just read the following piece on the Internet Movie Database this morning, and having physically WITNESSED Chicago comic and brilliant writer Greg Glienna editing his direct-to-video film/script, "Meet the Parents" back in 1991-1992, I'm astonished and incredibly annoyed to see Carrey quoted as saying he created the concept and characters while developing it with Steven Spielberg. (???) Perhaps he meant he created the concept of the sequel characters, the Fockers? But read the article below. The original writers of "Meet the Parents" were Greg Glienna and Mary Ruth Clark. There was a direct to video movie that starred Glienna and featured two other Chicago comics, the fabulous Emo Philips and the incredible Judy Tenuta.
So what the hell is Carrey talking about here? Or is he being misquoted and misunderstood, one hopes?
Here is the IMDB article that appeared this morning:
"Carrey Has 'No Regrets' Over Meet The Parents
16 December 2008 4:07 AM, PST
Hollywood funnyman Jim Carrey has no regrets after handing his role in 2000 movie Meet The Parents over to Ben Stiller.
The Ace Ventura star claims he created the original concept for the highly successful film and began developing the project with legendary director Steven Spielberg.
Carrey, who was due to take the lead role in the movie, and Spielberg, were both subsequently forced to drop out, citing scheduling commitments.
The part was then handed to Ben Stiller, who went on to make a hit sequel, Meet The Fockers, in 2004.
But Carrey insists he is glad he walked away from the project, because Stiller was much better suited to the role.
He tells U.S. talkshow host Larry King, "Meet the Parents was something that I was developing with Steven Spielberg. Yes. I actually created the Fockers in a creative meeting. Yes. But, it was perfect that Ben Stiller did it. When I saw it, I went 'That's the way it's supposed to be done'."
Yeah, note that underlined section...if they're saying he created the concept of "Meet the Parents", he didn't. Period. I'm surprised at IMDB for printing a story that's utter bullshit, and if what they meant to report was that Carrey created the concept of the Fockers sequel, they need to be specific in that and respect the ACTUAL original creators of the initial successful comedy.
