No, I don't think the writers are selfish, I'm actually referring to my own shadow side, which is hoping for a strike that lasts at leasts a month so I can finish out my two weeks of shooting here (that's as long as the show I'm working in can go before we run out of scripts), take a week off and then either temp or come back.
But listen, I haven't had a vacation in over TWO YEARS! In 2006, I was studying Hypnotherapy, Kundalini yoga and working 2 jobs...what a nightmere that year was in some respects. I was incessantly broke, tired and overloaded...all my own doing, thank you very much!
Over the summer much of the cast and crew took a break, went on vacations, hung out with their families...I temped. It was quite mellow and lovely, really, and I still worked on the lot so I kept my 90 second commute, which is always wonderful. Such a culture shock to go from production to corporate...yikes, it's veeeeery quiet and civilized over there. Here I have my own office, total freedom of expression and totally casual attire. There, I had to hide my tattoos and masquerade as a "normal" person! (shudder). ;)
Temping does offer some great freedom though...when I want or need time off, I just notify them. No drama, no obligations. And I kept my connections there good enough to return anytime. The money's not as good as it is here, no thanks to Warner Bros, but sometimes, when I have producers screaming at me over ridiculous shit, I want that temp freedom! Everything has it's peaks and valleys, right?
So, bottom line, I support the writer's strike because they DO have a right to ask for equal compensation. Writers have been treated like the bastard cousin or red-headed step children since the advent of talkies. It's really time for that to move along and evolve, folks. And while they're fighting for their fair share of the pie, I can take a week off to rest and be a woman of leisure!
Solidarity brothers! ;)
