Ok, someone please smack Obama for me right now. I was in the break room at work and there he is, on TV as always, flapping his gums about education reform and I stood there and witnessed him say the following:
anyone who drops out of school is failing America.
Really?
Interesting. Because I myself dropped out of school (college) when I realized it just wasn't something that interested or suited me and I have spent the past 20+ years of my life working my butt off, earning money and PAYING INTO THE TAX SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTRY...and excuse me, but if I am failing this country in doing so, then every "blue collar" worker who drives a truck, washes a dish, serves people their food, mows their lawn, fetches their children from school for them, etc are ALL failing America.
How do you like that, folks? This is SO unbelievably smug and arrogant I don't even know where to begin. Sure, wanting every kid to have the OPPORTUNITY to go to school is a noble sounding cause, but really, this is just more of that "let's keep the machine rolling and create more corporate drones to go to school, get degrees, work until they retire, put lots of money into government via taxes from their bloated salaries and then die and get out of the way" system. And so anyone who steps out of that, thinks differently and chooses to take the jobs that support all of these other people are failing this country?
Go f*ck yourself. Then give me back my tax money for the past 20+ years and I'll go live someplace where the "elected" officials might have the wherewithal NOT to say such astoundingly stupid, ignorant and horribly insulting things, whether they think them or not. Didn't the people who "handle" this man and who put him into this figure-head position of illusory power teach him not to insult and alienate the populace that supported him with almost nauseating fervor? Perhaps he glossed over that memo, or didn't even get one. Might want to add that to the next prep session for a press conference. Just a thought.
Mr. Obama, you are talking about the people who make it possible for you to coast through life with your shirt nicely dry cleaned, your cars nice and shiny and your Trader Joe's store shelves fully stocked. So in this dreamland of yours where every single US citizen has a college degree, um, WHO are you calling upon to do these jobs that keep this country running? Do you see these college grads of the future rounding up the silver buffalo (carts) in the Von's parking lot? I don't. But someone has to and those people are paying into the tax system to pay YOUR salary and so many others every damn day.
But pay attention to this people...this is what I was talking about when I watched him and said he wasn't genuine, he wasn't what he was selling and he definitely isn't some "man of the people." No one who truly understands and respects how hard people work in this country would say something so overwhelmingly asinine.
(and no, I am not a republican, I actually think both sides are full of crap and this whole system is b.s. personally, so this is not some partisan argument for another camp)
(additional addendum: whether he was referring to college dropouts or high school makes NO difference...my grandfather had to drop out of high school and he worked tirelessly his entire life to provide for his family -which he did beautifully - and was a VERY productive citizen...I also personally knew 3 people who dropped out of high school for various reasons when I was in school as well and they are all very successful, happy, productive citizens and always have been...it's still an ignorant, sheltered, obnoxious thing to say)
