Yesterday, i embarked on my last New York Adventure. In the past few years of living here i had an agenda of things that i had to see/do before leaving. There was one hanging over my head because it was all the way out in Brooklyn. Since it was so nice yesterday, i decided that after i met with my adviser, i would just keep truckin to Brooklyn to the cemetery. Yes, i like cemeteries a lot! There is a strange peace that i find there. I guess it is the dead people, but no matter, i enjoy it.
Greenwood Cemetery is HUGE and 560,000 people have been burried there. Now these people range from random New Yorkers to actual famous ones. I was on the hunt for Jean Michel Basquiat. He used to paint w/ Andy Warhol (who i hate btw, but i love Basquiat because he was an original). Basquiat is a Brooklyn native, his father was from Hati, and mother also a Brooklyn native. They divorced at some point in Jean's childhood, but he hit the ground running in his teens. He was well known for his grafiti throughout the city. SAMO was his tag, and he used to make his E's very differently, leaving off the "l" side and just using the three lines. Basquiat was only popular for a handfull of years, because along w/ his intense fame, came the feeding of his intense herion habbit. After Andy Warhol died, Basquiat overdosed. He was devistated that he lost the only friend that loved and respected him and didn't treat him like gutter trash as most others in the industry did. Jean Michel Basquiat died at 28. When he died i was 4 years old.
In addition to being an amazing artist, Basquiat was a beautiful black man. I have a weakness for them, especially ones with dreads, and he had them. Anyway, I found his grave after about an hour of searching. It was a very gratifying moment. I left him some flowers in the mess of random things other travelers have put on his grave. It was beautiful, and i am glad he could be part of my last great new york adventure. I am kindof sad that i put him off until the end, but i am glad that i didn't neglect going to see him while i still had the chance.
