THEOLOGY

For the last 25 years or so I have divided theology (the knowledge of God) into two categories:

  1. Dogmatic theology (things we know 'for sure' because they are clearly declared in scripture and supported by tradition)

  2. Speculative theology(things we're still thinking and praying about.)

A healthy Christian group or community has and encourages both. To liberals everything is speculative and nothing is known for sure. Tofundamentalists everything is dogma and if you speculate abouttheology you are a heretic.

I'm thankful that I was raised in a family and church that has, allows, and encourages both, Only in that atmosphere is one secure yet can grow.

I attend a Church that has that atmosphere. Everybody I know has the dogmatic theology and the speculative. I think if people are honest with themselves then you realize everybody has speculative theology that they believe in. Even my Pastor talks about....I believe that when you die that God will show you your life on a big screen and if you have been Born Again then those times in your life that you did sinful things........those times will be blotted out spots on the screen because God remembers them no more.

The few times that people have had issues with each other is when somebody promotes his or her speculative theology as fact when that speculative theology contradicts the teachings of the Bible. Thanks for your article.

What is a major problem is when an item of "speculative theology" such as the Mormons views on celestial marriage are taught as dogma. I believe that things that are true (and important to us in God's sight) are declared clearly (and repeatedly in different ways) in God's word.
