Personal
Pronouns
I
am certainly not a linguist but have been a student of popular and
Biblical literature for over 50 years. While in college I took two
one semester courses in Spanish. In them I learned that in Spanish
pronouns may have a “familiar” or “formal” style. For the
pronoun “you” in Spanish one must choose to say “”su”
(formal) or “tu” (familiar”). English used to have similar
usages but in current English we always use the “formal”
pronouns.
Quaker
Christians used to speak to and of both God and friends by using the
“familiar”
form of personal pronouns. Therefore rather than
saying “you” and “your” they would say “thee” and
“thine”. Most all Christians expressed the personal/close
relationship God has with those who love and obey God by addressing
God in the “familiar” form, praying “Thee”, “Thou”,
“Thy”, and “Thine”. In recent years people have come to
believe that such usage is more formal and respectful but in using
language that way they have turned past usage “on its ear”
