From
'Melting Pot' to 'Stew Pot'
For
generations America accepted immigrants from around the world and was
known as the great “Melting Pot”. But with the passage of the
long overdue Civil Rights Act of 1964 the society changed from being
a 'melting pot' to a great 'stew pot'. In the stew pot everyone adds
their special flavor but remains what they have been, enhanced by the
flavor of those around them.
So
we now longer become a mongrel mush but have turned into a rich,
flavorful blend. This affects every aspect of society.
Neighborhoods no longer are known by their ethnic relationship but
are blends of a bit of everything. Workplaces, businesses, schools,
civic organizations, churches, are blends of the wonderful, flavorful
stew that we are.
Life
is not easy but it is good. No longer do people of color have to
sleep in their car when traveling because there is “no vacancy”.
Growing up in southeast Texas I observed some horrible incidents and
was told of even worse things by older people.
