Churches
and Politics
In
my view churches should teach principles not “take positions on
political issues” .
The
moment a religious group begins to back a political party, movement,
or government, it loses its ability to give guidance and to speak
critically (which is sometimes necessary).
When
people, political constituents, know “the truth” they will make
good political choices. We've got to trust that. The American
principle of “separation of church and state” assures those who
seek to know and teach the truth that while they don't have to bear
the heavy burden of operating the government or have the danger of
being a part of it, they can speak freely, negatively or positively,
of all the government considers or does.
