My son, Jordan, lives and works as a translator in China. He speaks, reads and writes in Mandarin and Cantonese. I don't speak anything but French and English. Jordan wants me to join him in China. He lives and works outside of Hong Kong and tells me there is a lot of work for foreigners there. He claims the labor force is tapped out and that I could find work there easily. I wonder how true this is. Although I am extremely well educated, I can't find work here in Oregon. I live in Eugene, which is a college town; everyone here including the cats and dogs have advanced degrees. I have researched working at home on the Internet, but have found nothing but scams advertised. When I had children, I swore I would stay home with them, no matter the cost, and now I am finding just how costly this choice was. At 53, I am fairly new to the work force. Divorced ten years ago, I learned that my age was a huge factor in obtaining employment. Now what do I do? Leave this country to move to China? Take on foster kids? Move in with my mom? Last year I was homeless for months. I hail from the upper middle class. How could this happen to me? Well it did and it was the worst thing for my self-esteem. Does anyone have ideas about how to survive in America? What are the chances of being successful in China?

Your son is holding out a life line to you. Just try it for three months and if it doesnt work why not try sub-teaching across Europe? Degrees and second languages are not as plentiful here. I'm from Northern Ireland and can tell you that we have an imigrant population of polish and portugese and yet we are ignorant to a second language, Give your son the credit for getting you out of a dead end.
