Today on the van trip back from Co. Wicklow I got to thinking.
I know a whole lot of people that wish for a simpler life, long for the days when things weren't as cluttered, complicated, busy, etc.
And, I'm sure there are people out there who would say this, but I have never heard anyone express a desire for our lives to be more technologically advanced, except for perhaps in the area of medicine.
It's an interesting paradox. I know I'm saying nothing new and that plenty of people have thought of this before... but while technology gives us a lot, it takes a lot from us as well. It takes the hard work with our hands out of a lot of tasks... but a lot of joy comes from doing a task from start to finish, with your hands. Plus I really think you appreciate things more when you can recognize the work that went into it - you really don't take things for granted. And the time spent doing tasks is often spent with other people building relationships.
I'm not sure if this is a trait of Ireland or of L'Arche, but since I've been here I have cooked a lot from scratch, and it seems like those around me do to. And I never really thought about it until today, when I was having the discussiong with people that wish for a simpler life and wish that people would rediscover the art of working with their hands. But it's really pretty cool - I love cooking from scratch and putting time into a meal.
So while technology definitely makes our lives easier in a lot of ways, the lack of technology, or a voluntary abstention can really make you appreciate things more.
