 Timo Tolkki - Greensleeves
The word Greensleeves might not sound so familiar to some of you, but it's a song that will easily come to mind around Christmas time, as the lyrics for "What Child is This?" was set to the song.  One idea behind the real lyrics to Greensleeves is that it was talking about a Lady Green Sleeves...who some think could have been a promiscuous girl.  It's interesting how Christian lyrics could be set to a song that has had a different meaning all together.  Though, i think that this is a good point to make when it comes to understanding music.

Music in and of itself is not morally good or bad, in other words it is amoral.  It is how we associate the music that we hear through lyrics or a certain lifestyle that inheritantly defines the morality of a genre of music or just a song.  Even the instruments used for a song can give it a whole new meaning.  Why do we do this?  It's a good question to ask ourselves and one that I thought about through this specific song.

As a lot of church goers have when it comes to Christmas music or just hymns in general is that of how it "needs" a certain sound in order to be "good" or morally "correct."  Since when should music be put in a box?  Jesus gave us(Christians) the freedom to worship how our heart felt led to worship.  Should music define worship...or should worship be defined by how we(Christians) want to show our gratitude to our personal and loving God?  I'd rather go with the latter, and I think this song shows how barriers in both how lyrics of a "promiscuous" song can be turned into a Christian song and how worship shouldn't be defined by what instruments "traditional" Christian churches think should be played.

Christmas is about love and freedom in Christ, not traditional ways of worship!

Merry Christmas and enjoy! :)
