| Thomas Newman - Cathedral |
This next piece is pretty short. It's from a pretty unknown movie that's a few years old. Road to Perdition is a gangster movie with Tom Hanks. It's very interesting piece and it seems to do a good job depicting life in the...40s? Can't remember when the date of the movie takes place but oh well, enough about the movie!
I enjoyed this instrumental piece as it took the essence of the movie and put it into a very short song. It summarizes the story line but not necessarily the whole movie. When i think about this particular piece it reminds me a lot about the end of the movie, and through that the whole story. It allows me, through the song, to rethink the movie.
Going beyond the movie, i think the title of the song also brings an idea of what a "cathedral" essence would feel like. Could you see yourself walking into a cathedral with this music playing? I think it's an interesting concept as composers usually try and catch the imagination of the person listening and through the title, give a feel for the song is trying to capture. Even the choir voice close to the end helps to drive the point home, so to speak, as to give the feeling of being in a cathedral.
