| Tetris Theme...remixed? |
So i'm doing something new for this week and it includes a poll for your input! Tetris, the theme of this blog was one of the first games that i ever played as a kid and if you have been around a computer long enough, the chances of you ever playing or seen it around is pretty huge. You can actually check out the game for free and play online at www.freetetris.org. It might refresh your memory on the simple aspects of 8 bit games!
The tetris theme is very catchy, especially if you played it a lot like i did as a kid, and it sticks very easily and i doubt i'll ever forget the tune if i heard it. I hadn't heard the actual theme in a long time, so as i thought about doing this for my blog, i spent a couple hours looking around in the internet to find the theme and it wasn't easy as not many people tend to keep game tracks on hand! Found it i have, and out of due respect for the theme, i will post it here below. Though, this blog will focus on how certain remixes of this song has changed it, yet kept it intact.
I will use four separate remixes and you, the reader, will grade which remix is the best. Grading will be based on what you consider the important aspects of music is...for a remix. Is it originality, instruments used, or something more specific that you are looking for? Of course, this grading is also based on certain bias as i can only have four options for this poll on thoughts.com and there's probably tons of remixes for tetris and including all of them will take too much of yours and my time. Thinking of this, I have chosen four very different remixes that are all unique in its own way. All of the remixes come from www.ocremix.org website.
Here's the original Theme from tetris, very easy to understand and roughly two minutes long. You can tell that there's really not much texture to this song as it was made for a game that's really old and its original format did not allow it to sound as clean as an mp3 today is. The theme itself originated from the Russian folk song, Korobeiniki. If you listen to the folk song, you can easily pick out the theme from it. My search for the theme brought me there first, but it did not capture the originality of the actual theme that was from the game, which took a little longer to find.
Song: Tetris (-A- Theme)
Artist: Super Power Club
Album: Super Power Club: 8-bit Hits, Vol. 1 - EP
Genre: Game Theme
Alright, here we go. We all have an expert knowledge of tetris. You have probably checked the link out and played the game if it wasn't familiar to you and now you have also heard the original theme. You can without doubt say that you played the tetris from back in the day! Starting the list of remixes is one that i consider very upbeat. It is remixed from a guy who calls himself, cthonic. You can tell that he had some fun remixing this theme as the originality is hard to distinguish from the remix, but it's there and it's powerful. If I had to choose, i'd probably use this one when i play tetris as it adds quite a bit of flavor to a simple game.
cthonic - Linear Groove
Our next remix is roughly six minutes long, That's three times the length of the actual theme and after listening to it, you'd probably wish that it was twice the length on top of that! Jeremy Robson does an amazing job remixing this song. The song is a great instrumental piece that brings the best out of the tetris theme and puts it into...you guessed it, a concerto! It's really enjoyable to listen to and a great remix! He adds in variety and instruments(mostly piano) that brings out the flavor of a symphony.
Jeremy Robson - Piano Concerto in A minor
Our third remix brings in an interesting techno/trance mix to the Tetris theme. I havn't included any techno songs on my blog yet, but the plan to put some on in the future is in the works! R3FORGED does a pretty good job making the Tetris theme into an awesome trance piece that could possibly be put on any trance cd and people might not even be able to point out where this came from and it would sound legit! I enjoy this kind of variety to music and it adds a lot to to the tetris theme.
R3FORGED - Thirty-Plus Mix
The last theme is from someone called McVaffe. I enjoy this one quite a bit as it keeps more of the originality of the tetris theme than the others(of course this can be argued). The pace on this is pretty slow and builds up like the actual Korobeiniki song does, and what the tetris theme should do i think? But as you increase in levels, the blocks fall faster so this remix by McVaffe builds off of that to an extent. As the song is rougly four minutes, he has built in some transition music that fits to the theme as well. Really interesting piece.
McVaffe - Gift From Moscow
Alright, that's four remixes that should cover a variety of different instruments that can be used to make the original tetris theme sound...not so boring! :) I hope you enjoyed this change of pace for the blog and make sure you vote!
