Ladies and Gentlemen~
I am proud to announce to you, I finally got a job!!!
Oh thank goodness because I only came to Taiwan with 20NT. That's less than a dollar in US. It's maybe worth about 75 cents.... It's amazing how I lasted this long since Taiwan isn't a cheap place.
So here's what I did: Everyday I sent out resumes. Maybe 2 or 3 a day. My resume isn't impressive at all though because all the job I ever had was in US, doesn't help much in Taiwan. I sent resumes to drugstores/ pharmacies, clothing stores, video stores, 7-11s (7-11 is kinda like a convient store) and I also sent a bunch out to cram schools. Have you ever heard of cram school? It's a pretty popular thing in Taiwan. It's a place where you sent your kids to after school to cram. So they can learn more. It was hell when I had to go to one when I was young. We go to school at 7, get out of school at 3:30, and then we rush off to cram school til 9pm. IT WAS HELL!! It's also a 7 days a week thing, and everyone has to go to them. Only those who claim themselves as geniuses do not.
An Auntie of mine, she introduced me to a cram school called the Baden-Powell's Language School. Dang, that place was huge!! They got like 50 teachers! I did an interview with them and they told me they would call me. I waited a week. They didn't call me at all. A distant cousin of mine owns Baden, but I guess it doesn't help so I moved on. A friend of my grandma's brought me to another cram school (cram school are everywhere!!!!) called Uncle Tom's Class. Uncle Tom is from Florida, I really like him and his wife. I dunno his wife's name, I just call her Miss Lee. She is the one who teaches all the classes. Uncle Tom doesn't speak Mandarin; only english, so he just works in the office all day. I really like them because one, they are American, and two, they hired me!!!! Turns out, taking the back door is easier~ Resumes are useless, if you really want a job, you need someone who knows somebody. That's the way to do it; that's how I did it~
Even though Miss Lee still teaches all the classes and I feel like I'm just there to keep Uncle Tom company but hey, I get paid, it's all that matters. Miss Lee let's me teach once in a while but since I don't know phonics, I'm not much help to her. Yes, it's true, I don't understand phonics. I may be born in America and spent half of my life in American school, but I didn't learn English from the basic like eveyone else. My mom just threw me a dictionary and told me to memorize it. It took me 2 years and it was hell. I can't make the students do that too you know? Or, can I..... Hm..... After I settled down with this job, Baden called me, wanting me to start right away. They were offering me health coverage and a stable schedule that pays by month not by hour. I was pretty moved by the offer but I had to turn them down. I was scare; I'm tired of starting over. Now that I work at Uncle Tom's, I don't want to risk losing a job...
It's not fair, I waited for them for a week, I thought they just don't want me anymore that's why I went ahead and started looking for another. I can't jump around like that, so I didn't take Baden's offer.
So anyways, Uncle Tom's pays by hour, 120 NT, about 3 USD an hour, but hey, it is better than nothing right? I just want a job so I can start saving to come back to America. I miss my boyfriend and my friends. I don't have anyone to talk to here except my brother but my brother only comes home twice a week.... Maybe be I should start another Lois Fund....
alright, see you all in another blue moon.
