What Does Our Clothes Say About Us?
I had great fun dressing up for Halloween this year. Putting on a costume and disappearing for a while behind a new persona was an amazing experience. But now it's back to reality and everyday life.
But it got me thinking....
Are the clothes we wear on a day to day basis a costume of sorts? When we go our closet and decide what to wear are we not putting on our personality for the world to see, whether we are aware of it or not? When we go to the store and pick something out are we not making a statement about our self perception?
As we change and grow so does our wardrobe or so it has been my experience. I've never been much of a fashionista but lately I am more and more aware of my appearance. The clothes I have from just a year ago just don't seem to fit me any more and slowly I'm making changes to update to a more mature look suited to this stage of my life and my attitude trying to project a more mature image.
Even if I'm being sincere in making a statement through my choice of clothes, is that a form of a costume, something you put on?

Jeans, t-shirts and sneakers make up my wardrobe, Don't really know what that says about me.

You know, I never really thought of it like that, but I would venture to think that you are correct in that assumption. What we wear is a reflection of our personalities, what we like, how we see ourselves.

I like to wear sparkly shirts..with rhinestones, or just bright colors, such as pinks, yellow's, pastels..I guess because I'm bouncy, happy all the time, see the light in everything..I really don't know, lol. I never look at dark colors much, such as navy or maroon, purples...but I do like black...black pants, black jeans..but the tops..are bright.

So yes, I guess we could be in "costume" on a daily basis really. Then as we move into another phase of our lives, our clothing start to change to how we feel, how we see ourselves, maybe what's happening in our life right then....

This was an excellent post. Thanks for touching on this subject.

I mean if you really thing about it also applies to hair, make up (for girls any ways) anything that has to do with our appearance.
Celebrities are familiar with this and work it all the time.

Yes, true too. Everything about our persona..clothing, hair, make up, jewelry, earrings...all things used in how we view ourselves, our likes and dislikes in life, our personalities being showed off in what we wear and how we present ourselves to others.

I'm sitting here naked with nothing but a smile, I might put on some pajama pants if I go outside today. If I'm not too lazy, I might even comb my hair, and shave.

Well I'll be getting some new clothes soon. My old stuff doesn't seem to fit properly any more. My jeans are too loose and my tops are too tight so it will be interesting to see what I end up buying.

I think that you are right, we do use clothes as a costume of sorts. Maybe I should amend that a little because in summer and especially in the winter I dress for the weather, it is hard to look attractive in the winter when you wear a coat that weighs 20 pounds, but I know that when i dress up I feel a lot different than I do if I wear my t shirts and shorts. Interesting subject you brought up, I think I am going to be thinking about this a little this afternoon and then maybe I will go in and take a good look at what I go out in....lol

There is the practical aspect of clothing of course. But when we have a choice I think we are making a statement.
I think it's time for me to amend MY statement. ;)

I know as I've grown and changed with experience that my wardrobe has changed. My clothing of the past shows the milestones in my life in a way. I know I have three different styles of clothing to represent th different facets of me and my life. The business attire for when I'm working--I work part-time in investment banking--the clothes I wear to University where I'm studying Law, and my everyday clothes which are chosen to really represent my personality. Great blog. - Bia.

Yes. Interesting point. We do have different outfits for different occasions that reflect various aspects of our personality appropriate to the environment. But that just sort of emphasis the original point of clothes being a costume of sort.
Thanks for your input.

I couldn't agree more. My wardrobe is so random like me... it has a little bit of everything.

This is very true. It's something that we actually studied in first year sociology. The fact that clothing, and our general presentation, are among many other forms of non-verbal communication. We are sending and receiving messages to those around us through the way that we present ourselves. Even as a guy, I will think about what sort of things I want to communicate with my clothing at particular stages in my life, as well as in particular situations. I think that's why so many people like myself enjoy buying new clothes. We are changing people, so we want to present new messages through our appearance to reflect that.
