The Most Important Thing!
I went to my best mate's 20th Birthday party on saturday and I had a blast. It was the kind of fun you could only enjoy with a group who you really gel with. The were drinking games, walks down memory lane, more drinking, food fights and lets not forget the shots of cherry sourz! But Saturday made me realise how bloody important your friends are. You can be 100% the real you around them and you don't have to feel embarrassed. I mean there are probably a lot of different persona's you adopt throughout your life but you can just be person who you want to be with them.

There's the work you: you put on the uniform, whether it be the suit or the name tag, you wear your favourite false smile and try and let the whole world think you love your job. You'll laugh at the jokes your boss tells you even though its the tenth time you've heard it today. You'll bite your tongue when you get looked over for the promotion and it gets given to your colleague who used your idea anyway! And you enter the same old conversation with your work mate about how the canteen food tastes like it has been there since last Christmas.

Then there's family you: You try to be polite and not swear in front of your Mum because you know she'll give you a back hander if she catches you uttering a single word that isn't clean. You pretend you're the perfect family when ever you're in public or have guests over even though you put the fun in dysfunctional, but know one else has to know that right? And you'll listen to the constant rain of insults from Grandma because she thinks its only constructive criticism but really all her ranting about the few extra pounds you gained from your holiday have given you a complex and you can't even eat celery without feeling like she's watching you with a disparaging look on her face.

But somehow as soon as your answer the phone to your best mate or step into the pub with her you immediately step back into your comfort zone. You can honestly laugh at her jokes and laugh until your sides ache and your eyes fill with tears or you can tell her you're three year old niece can tell better ones. You can eat as much as you want without feeling a pang of guilt because you can just both start your diet tomorrow. You can tell her your inner most secrets and know that she'll protect them like they are her own. That's why on Saturday I had to grit my teeth and not punch my wonderful best mate's ex-boyfriend in the face and then cut off his precious pony tail!

This is all because I had made a promise not to inflict pain on him at her party.  I had to sit and watch him have another girl sit on his lap and feed him breadsticks, seriously I felt like we had transported back into Roman times! But she wanted to speak to him on his own when she was ready because she wanted to tell him that she still loved him. Try as I might she just wouldn't accept that he would be on his own in hospital after I broke both of his legs, plus he wouldn't be able to get up and walk off. I think my idea was very logical. But alas she made me promise not to make a scene at her party, but she never mentioned if I happened to see him wandering around town :P
