| A few days off from work |
So on friday feb 6th it was Waitangi day, which is a celebration concerning the Treaty of Waitangi; that was signed between the British and Maori people long ago. So naturally Ben and I thought it would be great to drive to Waitangi.....well we got their, a bit too late in the day and missed most of the festivities, but it was still kind of cool to see the treaty grounds and all the people out there. also saw some war boats called kawa i think? (really long canoe looking things like the boats from the chinese boat race dad and i did on the maumee river in toledo).
anywho, it was a hot day and i was tired of driving so we walked around the festival a bit, then headed out to find a place to sleep
we ended up at this backpackers hostel called Bunkdown Backpackers. side note: i finally bought a Lonely Planet book on NZ so that was a bit helpful!! especially finding places to sleep in our price range. this place had a "aviary". which was just an outdoor cage thingy with canaries and finches in it. kinda cool, but was in the middle of a shitty, unkept backyard, so it took away from the surroundings.
the next day we drove around looking for things to do. visited Abbey Caves and Quarry Gardens. Did a ton of walking this day. We took a track at the gardens that we thought would last 15 minutes and was forever long.... on another super hot HOt day. It was atleast 30 degrees C.
Then drove to Orewa (right by waiwera) planning to head to the hot pools and sheep world on sunday. found another awesome backpackers called Pillows and took a walk on the beach and had a great night falling asleep to Lake Placid....dumb as movie!
anywho, sunday moring went to church , then instead of original plans they changed and the day sucked driving around places. ended up in manakau outside of papakura and didnt do much.
we are now back at camp and taking it easy. going to clarks beach tomorrow just to chill.
have to work for a full day on wednesday and then don't know what else work we'll have next week or this weekend. hopefully something so i dont get bored....
