"This was not one of your better ideas, you know?".....he scolded her. She just looked at him lovingly and smiled...'I know, but my heart was in the right place.' She patted him on the leg. No, it most likely wasn't the best idea she ever came up with, to celebrate his birthday on Halloween. The restaurant she picked wasn't even on the map anymore but she knew it would be the perfect place to have their intimate celebration. And who would have thought that the only road to the place was the Old Coast Road....the one road that was full of potholes, and gravel. To the one side you had the steep drop off to the rocks and ocean and to the other a few old dilapidated houses that barely looked like anyone even lived in anymore. But they were alone and thats what she had wanted even with his sour attitude.
As if adding insult to injury the skies opened up and the clouds turned black. LIghtning lit up the nite and the thunder shook the very earth. POP...PSSSSS...."Oh my god, what the hell was that? Don't tell me we got a flat tire!". Now he was pissed off. She thought maybe if she looked hard enough she may actually see smoke coming from his nose and the thought made her giggle. 'So, you'll change it, it'll be alright.' "OH yeah? Well, for your information I took the spare in to get it fixed yesterday....at your insistence I might add!". 'Oops, I forgot'....
He got out of the car and went around to assess the damage of the tire. Rain pelting him as he bent over...."Holy shit....some idiot put tacks all over the road".....Now, she actually could see the smoke rolling out of his nostrils. 'Ok, I thought I saw a house over there...we'll go see if they'll let us use their phone.' She opened the car door and took his hand and they started up the incline that led to the big house on the hill. "No lights, must be that nobodys home.." She had been sure she had seen a light a few seconds ago and ignored his assumption. They knocked on the door....no answer. They knocked even louder....nothing. "I told you....no ones here...let's just go." 'And do what??? Sit in the car til someone passes along???...We've been on this road for an hour and we haven't passed one car'. With that she jumped off the front porch and ran around to the side of the house. "What the hell are you doing???" he asked. 'Whats it look like?...I'm bustin in'....She said as she tried to pry the window up. "I cannot believe you're going to break in a strange house....You must want to spend the nite in jail"....With that being said he heard the window crack and glass shatter. He knew it was too late for anything but to try and be the gentleman he was and he insisted on at the very least going in first. He pulled himself in and then grabbed her hands and yanked her up.
'OK, now lets look for the phone'....."Alright and then lets get the hell out of here....This place gives me the creeps...big time".
As they searched for the phone they noticed the furniture was all covered in sheets and that there were cobwebs hanging from everywhere. It was pretty obvious that the house had long since been deserted. The thunder was so loud and the only light they had was from the lightning that would bring a moments worth of glimmer to there dismal surroundings. All of a sudden they heard a noise that seemed to be coming from the upstairs. It sounded like someone walking around. 'I'm going upstairs to see if someones home....I'll be right back.'....He didn't even like the sound of that remark but before he could say anything she was gone. He had the distinct feeling that someone was watching him and it gave him a shudder. All he could think about was the news earlier in the day. A serial killer was on the run and they had cautioned the locals about strangers lurking around. 'What a night to celebrate a stupid birthday', is all he could think.
The sound of a scream jolted him out his daydream and he ran over to the steps. There rolling down the tall staircase was a severed head. The scream caught in his throat as he realized it was his wife's head. He ran to the front door and tried to open it and couldn't. He knew he would need some kind of weapon so he went over to the fireplace and saw that there was an axe leaning against the stone hearth. He grabbed it and went running to the window. As he was trying to get out the window he heard noises coming from the next room. He listened but couldn't make out what they were. He was near hysterics by now but wanted to know just who was in the house with him. He slowly walked over to the double doors with his axe at the ready. His heart was beating so fast and hard he thought it would burst from his chest. His hands were all sweaty holding onto the axe handle. His tongue felt 2 sizes to big bc his mouth was so dry. Slowly he walked closer to the doors....his hand reaching out to touch the knob handle. He noticed the flickering of light through the cracks of the door and his mind was no longer sane. He was now insane with fear. He began to twist the knob and ever so slowly pull the door open.......
The next few seconds seemed to come in slow motion as he saw this large man with a huge scar across his cheek. His teeth were bad...his hair greasy and dirty....his mouth in a snarl. In one hand was a machete....the other behind his back. The man took one step towards him and he raised his axe.....the man brought his arm up and then started to bring his other arm around....'SURPRISE'......he heard his wife say as she started to yank off the mask......just before he imbedded the axe into her....the birthday cake fell to the ground.....the last sound he heard was the scream of horror......his scream!
