 IT WAS ALL HOLLOWS EVE.....I

I had just got back from vacationing and wasn't too happy about returning to work. Now that I thought about it, the trip wasn't too good either. I had just arrived all ready to begin a wonderful weekend of skiing and slipped in the parking lot breaking my ankle, so I was laid up the entire time while my friends were out enjoying the snow and the slopes and the cute ski instructors. 'Grrrrrr' was the only thing I could think of and now it was back to work. 'What a miserable life I have' I thought as I hobbled in on my crutches to the apartment building where I worked on the night shift answering service. On top of that it was All Hollow's Eve and I was sure I'd be getting my fair share of crank phone calls.

My friend and owner of 'All Night' was just finishing her shift and was anxious to leave and go home. 'Where's Sue?'....I asked not seeing the other girl that was suposed to work with me. 'Sorry, it's just  you and me from now on'. 'I had to let Sue go!'.....'Oh, great!' was all I could think of.....'Just my luck!'.

I sat down and got out my 'stuff'.....a magazine, a snack and my mail that I hadn't had a chance to read yet. I made some coffee to keep me awake, settled in for a long lonely nite and waited for my first call. It wasn't long before it came....Ringggggg....and I picked up the reciever and answered in my very professional voice...."Good Evening....All Nite....How can I help you?". I heard the breathing....no answer.....again I repeated myself a little nervous this time....."Good Evening...All Nite....Can I help you?". His voice was deep....'Yes, I want to speak to Ms. Smith'...."Just one moment please"....I buzzed Ms Smith's room and it was silent. "I'm sorry, sir Ms Smith seems to be out....is there any message?"....dial tone. A few minutes later the same caller....same answer.....and same hang up. I got his name this time though.....It was Roger.

After some time I recieved a call from Ms Smith asking if there were any messages for her. I told her that a Roger had called several times and was quite anxious to speak to her.  I heard the gasp as she seemed to have to catch her breath. 'Is there something wrong Ms Smith?'.....'Did you hear his voice?.....Do you need to ask that question?' was her reply to me. I understood what she was saying because he definitely gave me the creeps. 'Tell him I'm not in....please!'. I could hear the fear in her voice and assured her I would take care of it if he called again.

A short time later the phone rang yet again...."I want to speak to Ms Smith NOW!".....I knew already who it was and explained that she wasn't home yet and I would be happy to take any message he would care to leave. He was silent for what seemed like a long time and finally said....'Shes not home, you say?....Then why did I just see her pull up to the building?'......and hung up. I felt a chill go up my spine as if death itself had stepped into the room. I sat and wondered if I should call her and let her know he knew she was home. After a long while I decided under the circumstances I should. I dialed her apartment and listened as the phone rang and rang.....finally I heard the phone being picked up and began telling her....'Ms Smith....I got another phone call from that Roger guy and he knows you're home! I thought I'd better let you know.'......Silence......Silence.......'Ms Smith?....did you hear what I said?'. The scream in my throat wouldn't come out when I heard...."Ms Smith can't come to the phone right now....can I take a message?". Roger!!!!!!!!!!! He was in the building. He was in her apartment.

I knew I needed to call someone and thought of the nightguard. I couldn't get him on the phone so I hobbled out to the front desk. He was no where to be found. Where could he be? Probably making his rounds....at least I hoped so. I began to go back to the safety of my office when I heard a knocking noise. It sounded like someone was bumping the wall.....BAM....BAM....BAM. I walked over to the elevator doors and saw something was in the door way. OMG....it was the night watchman and he wasn't breathing. I was all alone!

I practically ran with my broken ankle back to my room where I could call 911 and lock myself in safety til help arrived. I was so glad to see that door marked 'All Nite' and quickly went and flipped the lock. I sat down all out of breath and dialed 911.....'Please come right away !'....I took a deep breath and tried to relax as much as anyone could during a crisis like this. I nearly jumped out of my skin when the phone rang again. I wasn't going to answer it but the caller didn't seem to want to give up. 'All Nite'......'How can I help you?'....my voice was so shaky and filled with such fear. I could hear the breathing but this time it seemed so much more loud......that raspy deep breathing ....'Can I help you?'......my heart was beating so fast I thought my chest would explode. And then I heard it.....I heard the voice......'No, but I'm going to help you !!!'.....It wasn't on the phone...... he was right behind me.....
